Basic Function

Responsible for administration of a computerized database management system. Directs and monitors activities of junior staff. Performs day to day troubleshooting and support activities. Develops new databases and implements enhancements to existing databases.

Essential Position Responsibilities

Responsible for the evaluation, installation, maintenance, and support for enterprise class database management systems.

Implements application databases, sets up database backup and recovery, data integrity procedures, space management strategies, and security. Reviews database application designs for adherence to these database standards and procedures.

Supervises the implementation of the backup strategy and the testing of Disaster Recovery processes.

Effectively uses database utility, monitoring and tuning tools.

Leads the selection of database hardware and software for small to medium projects, specifying any additions or upgrades to the database software that may be necessary.

Provides consulting support to application teams that use enterprise class databases.

Is the lead DBA for larger projects.

Participates in the evaluation of vendor application packages that use a Database Management System.

Maintains performance and tuning of application and RDMBS systems software; specifies the techniques for monitoring database performance. Identifies and provides resolutions for basic to complex servicerelated problems and accurately documents outages, anomalies and fixes.

Works with Infrastructure personnel to install and test new versions of or patches to the Database Management System.

Coordinates the efforts of more junior Database Administrators and supervises and mentors new database administrators on adherence to database standards, procedures and best practices.

Keeps abreast of new database related technology and products.

Nature and Scope

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Technical Team Leader or Systems Manager.

The incumbent must be able to manage his/her own projects, and work independently with some technical supervision.

The position is responsible for ensuring open lines of communication between developers and the Database Administration team and between the Database Administration team and the Technology Infrastructure support areas.

The incumbent must respond to information requests quickly and consistently.

The incumbent is capable of managing the activities of others on small to medium projects.

The incumbent may be called upon to serve as a technical representative on committees, ad hoc projects, etc.

The Database Administrator II may help train more junior team members.

Supervisory Responsibility


Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Information Services or related discipline.

Six or more years Information Systems experience.

Three or more years Database Administration experience.

Requires a thorough knowledge of the system development life cycle and its

interaction with database development.

Technical Skills

Has very good knowledge of one or more database management systems.

Has strong knowledge of physical database design and performance monitoring tools.

Has strong knowledge of the operating system upon which the database is installed.

Has a general understanding of personal desktop computers.

Understands how to use Office Suite products for word processing and spreadsheets.

Other Job Information
