The Merchant Assistant provides operational and administrative support in the planningand management of category sales, promotional activity, margin, inventory, product assortment and vendor relationships.They will work closely with the Category Managers and cross-functional departments to ensure activities are properly executed.


  • Support the Category Manager(s) in the design, development and maintenance of business plans. Assist in executing effective strategies and implementing tactics to increase profitability and improve sales.

  • Process purchase orders, resolve invoicing issues and ensure timely merchandise delivery.

  • Monitor market and consumer trends to effectively identify category products and increase sales and profit margin. Communicate information about new products and changes to relevant teams within the company.

  • Attend meetings with the Category Managers and vendors while honing industry negotiation skills. Conduct business review with vendors to achieve mutual profitable goals.

  • Prepare product presentations as needed.

  • Address internal and external customer issues promptly and accurately.

  • Provide support for product advertising, marketing collaterals, tradeshows and promotional events by working with cross functional partners on all aspects of product.

  • Monitor and control expenses within allotted budget.

  • Work with the Category Manager to build, develop and sustain relationships with Vendors

  • Work cross functionally to collaborate with Marketing, Supply Chain, Retail Operations, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Public Relations and Finance to achieve category plans and to share category insights.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

Required Knowledge:

  • Must have strong retail math skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and PC skills, with an emphasis on spreadsheet applications

  • 1-3 years prior experience in Merchandising, Marketing or related field.

Skill and Ability:

  • Ability to multi-task and utilize resources to execute tasks within a deadline oriented environment

  • Commitment to continuous process improvement, initiatives and ability to solve problems creatively.

  • Highly motivated and high level of initiative; inspires confidence to work independently and in support of department goals and business objectives.

  • Ability to build relationships and work cross functionally.
