SUMMARY: Following the successful completion of Harvard’s campaign, and with continuing momentum in raising large gifts, the University wants to ensure that donors of eight- and nine-figure gifts receive personalized, top-level stewardship and recognition in line with their extraordinary generosity. This position is a key leader within University Donor Relations, focused on developing and implementing personalized and comprehensive stewardship and engagement for a select group of donors. The focus will be on donors who are managed by the University Principal Gifts team, but it can include work with donors who have significant giving at the Schools.


As new gifts are booked, proactively initiates and manages planning for stewardship and recognition. Works closely with gift officer on announcement, events, and recognition for significant gifts. Partners with principal gift officers and donor relations colleagues across the University to develop and execute ongoing stewardship and recognition strategies, including plans that could be carried out by other teams or individuals within UDR. Seeks special opportunities to steward donors. Develops relationships with administrators across Harvard to stay abreast of latest activities and developments that can lead to donor recognition and engagement opportunities. Remains current with innovative work done by other organizations, and considers multiple ways, including digital, of connecting with donors about the impact of their philanthropy.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Develops annual reporting and engagement strategies for a portfolio of top donors, collaborating with principal gift officers and other stakeholders and thinking creatively to develop plans that suit the individual needs of each donor.


  • Evaluates stewardship processes for principal gifts and develops best practices for top donor stewardship and recognition.


  • Partners with UDR’s director and senior associate director to coordinate top-donor strategies and make recommendations regarding stewardship team’s assignments and priorities.


  • Maintains a portfolio of donors for stewardship. Works with colleagues to develop a deep understanding of donors to be stewarded; gathers information from Schools, departments, and senior administrators about use of funds; writes reports, and develops unique gifts, video and web-based content, and other pieces that are customized to the donor’s preferences and gift designations.


  • Explores new methods, such as videos or web-based platforms, to engage and inform donors. Develops ideas for customized presentations, recognition for named spaces and other key gifts, and other creative touches. Reaches out to colleagues across the University to develop strategies for publicity, engagement, and other stewardship related to top donors, gifts, and funds in portfolio.


  • Stays current with activities related to assigned donors, coordinating with prospect research and principal gift officers to identify breaking news or additional connections to share with the donor.


  • Monitors fundraising activity and consults with senior associate director to identify new gifts from assigned donors to add to stewardship, and routinely reviews and updates plans for donors in portfolio.


  • Drives the resolution of complex donor relations issues in collaboration with fundraisers and administrators with minimal direction. Monitors funds to ensure that they are being used according to donors’ intentions.


  • Occasionally provides support for other UDR team priorities as needed, including drafting correspondence and compiling donor bios.


  • Maintains an accurate comprehensive filing and tracking system on all activities and ensures that activity is recorded in internal database (Advance).
