POLITICO is looking for an ambitious, energetic journalist to cover the California State Legislature for our flagship intelligence service, the Legislative Compass, and POLITICO Pro subscribers. This role is part of an ambitious, ongoing effort to expand POLITICO’s California coverage and overall state-focused reporting. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with California’s legislative operations, as well as a deep curiosity about the inner workings of the Capitol and the language of lawmakers. We’re looking for policy nerds or those who aspire to be.
This reporter will work collaboratively with both the legislative services editor and our Sacramento-based California reporting team. The candidate will track advancement of bills through the legislative process by monitoring committee and floor activity and staying apprised of up-and-coming legislation from state lawmakers. They will also be expected to cover breaking news on votes while writing bill analyses for a subscriber audience.
The job will require excellent communication and organizational skills with a firm understanding of California’s legislative process. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in politics and policy, as well as superior attention to detail and experience with web production. This candidate will support various groups within editorial as needed.
