Summary:
The Ophthalmology Extern aims to give employee practical experience and is intended to fill certified ophthalmology assistant role once ophthalmology assistant certification is received. The Ophthalmology Extern is responsible for performing tasks needed to support the ophthalmologist’s care and treatment of the patients’ eye care needs. This may include vision exams and testing, collecting patient information and providing patient education related to medications and procedures. W orks collaboratively with other clinical staff to meet patient need.
Responsibilities:
The Ophthalmology Extern functions to support the ongoing eye care of the patient by working under the supervision of the ophthalmologist, performs vision exams and testing, collects patient information, provides patient education and assists the ophthalmologist with patient care and procedures as warranted. The ophthalmology extern facilitates for medication refills and answering of patient questions regarding care, procedures and/or medications. Provides appropriate infection control measures as defined by YRMC Infection Control Protocol; arrange exam/treatment rooms in preparation for clinics/procedure; maintains medical inventory in exam rooms; uses appropriate cleaning techniques between patients and clinic exam/treatment rooms; maintains supplies, linens, equipment, and stocks instruments; practices OSHA safety
