Position Summary: In support of 350+ schools and administrative sites located throughout each borough, the Deputy Borough Technology Director (DBTD) is responsible for assisting in the oversight of complex levels of technical support related to the analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance of operating and data communications systems. In this role, the DBTD will lead a team of technicians, interns, and consultants and collaborate closely with various teams and departments within the organization. The primary objective will be to ensure the efficient operation and implementation of technology systems and services, seamlessly aligning them with the goals and needs of the NYC Public Schools (NYCPS). This position requires strong technical expertise, leadership and supervision skills, and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Works with DIIT technical and instructional staff, school-based administrators and designees including the SPOC, district-based Superintendents and designees, as well as central office leaders and designees to carry out the mission of the work unit. Collaborates with the Network, LAN Services, Telecommunications, and Engineering Teams in troubleshooting and resolving extremely complex operations and communications issues as they arise.

Responsibilities
Technical Team Supervision
- Provide strong leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a team of technicians responsible for maintaining and supporting technology systems, infrastructure, and services.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, encouraging teamwork, knowledge sharing, and professional growth among team members.
- Conduct regular team meetings to communicate goals, provide feedback, and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
- Optimize team productivity by coordinating work assignments, distributing tasks based on expertise and workload, and ensuring efficient resource allocation.
- Collaborate closely with DIIT teams, instructional staff, and stakeholders to identify technology needs, evaluate existing systems, and develop comprehensive technology plans and roadmaps.
- Oversee the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of hardware, software, networks, databases, and new operating systems while prioritizing optimal performance, scalability, security, and reliability.
- Continuously monitor and analyze system metrics, proactively identifying areas for improvement and implementing enhancements to optimize system functionality and user experience.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to make informed recommendations for technology adoption and integration.
- Engage with instructional, administrative, and support staff across various departments and schools to deeply understand their technology requirements, challenges, and goals.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to design and implement technology solutions that align with their needs and support instructional goals, administrative processes, and operational efficiency.
- Act as a liaison between the DIIT Division and other departments, teams, and vendors to facilitate effective communication, knowledge sharing, and coordination of technology initiatives.
- Provide training and support to end-users, promptly addressing technology-related inquiries, resolving issues, and fostering technology literacy throughout the organization.
- Lead and manage technology projects from concept through post completion evaluation, ensuring successful delivery within defined timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Define clear project objectives, scope, and deliverables, develop comprehensive project plans, resource allocation strategies, and risk mitigation approaches.
- Coordinate project activities, manage dependencies, and proactively identify and address risks, issues, and obstacles to ensure project milestones and goals are achieved.
- Effectively communicate project progress, updates, and outcomes to stakeholders through regular reports, presentations, and status meetings.
- Collaborate with the DIIT Security team to establish incident response plans, coordinate security incident investigations, and implement appropriate remediation measures.
- Stay up to date with the latest security threats and trends, and proactively address emerging risks by implementing proactive security measures.
- Provide guidance and training to staff and end-users on security best practices, ensuring awareness and compliance throughout the organization.
- Foster a culture of security awareness by promoting the importance of data protection and privacy across all levels of the organization.
- On behalf of the instructional and administrative sites within the borough, manages the day-to-day activities, both simple and complex, associated with break-fix software and related operations and network support for devices and other IT tools and/or equipment.
- Directs and guides technical teams responsible for supporting and troubleshooting complex wireless issues throughout the NYCPS, one of the largest wireless networks in the country. Includes troubleshooting and resolving difficult internet access issues as well as web filtering problems.
- Oversees the troubleshooting of complex mainframe issues related to downloading and sharing of files.
- Contributing member of NYCPS Software Imaging Committee to assist in establishing policy and guidelines.
- Assigns incidents to team members as appropriate.
- Serves as the technical resource to team and schools/administrative sites on IT procurement, inventory, assignment, and disposition of equipment while accounting for lifecycle/longevity and refresh planning.
- Keeps abreast of current procedures, policies and processes within the work unit.
- Provides support for special projects as determined by DIIT leadership.
- Performs the operational duties of the Borough Technology Director in their absence.
Minimum
- A certificate from an accredited technical school (approximately 675 hours) with a specialization in computer operations, and two years of satisfactory full-time computer operations experience, in a large-scale networked, multi-tiered, or mainframe computer environment, or two years of satisfactory data communications network experience working in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment; or
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory full-time experience, acquired within the last eight years, as described in "1" above; or
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience, acquired within the last eight years, as described in "1" above; or
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least two years of full-time experience, acquired within the last eight years, as described in "1" above.
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above
Preferred
- Prior experience supervising and managing staff in an IT environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, effective planning and problem-solving abilities, and strong technical expertise including relevant industry recognized credentials.
- Strong leadership skills in motivating staff, implementing adaptive & logic-based decision making, and a solutions-oriented mindset considering both short and long term impact of proposed solutions.
- Working knowledge of industry standard software applications.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of computer operations.
- Ability to follow spoken and written instructions of a technical nature.
- Ability to monitor a network of multi-user personal computer systems and various types of hardware, peripherals, and software.
- Strong spoken and written communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and persuasively.
- Excellent record of attendance and punctuality.
