Job Summary:

The Lead Software Engineer is a seasoned professional and subject matter expert with comprehensive job area knowledge and in-depth knowledge of software development projects, technology development and advanced software engineering practices. This team member will be a part of our rapid solution capability team, and will frequently work on cutting-edge projects, prototypes and new integration efforts. This team member will heavily contribute to planning, design, implementation, verification, deployment, and support activities for custom software components and applications. This team member will also provide advanced technical, logical, and problem-solving expertise to help build innovative software systems and solutions. This person may perform task management activities for other software engineers, including work breakdown, design and code reviews, and technical feedback.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interact directly with engineering team and program management staff to understand product/project goals and provide insights and recommendations based on technical subject matter expertise
  • Translate customer, stakeholder and, market inputs into technical plans and executable steps
  • Provide guidance to peers on their designs, including coaching and training for software engineers; may serve as a team lead and set direction and tasking for more junior team members
  • Effectively present technical designs to software engineering, program management, and other team members
  • Software design, development, testing to ensure prototypes, demonstrations and products are successful; often developing in ambiguous requirements requiring iteration with customers and stakeholders
  • Unit and component test software components and applications to ensure quality of deliverables
  • Provide direction, input and effort toward the technical verification of all technical, functional and corporate requirements prior to delivery of software components and applications
  • Investigate, analyze and resolve defects rapidly
  • Track and report status of tasks, deliverables, and issues to software engineering team, program management team and stakeholders
  • Help ensure team adherence to corporate processes and standards for all activities and deliverables during all phases of involvement in the software development life cycle
  • Identify innovations and lessons learned within the software engineering team to maximize quality and productivity
  • Investigate, explore and adopt new technologies to incorporate for efficiency, performance and technical gain
  • Expertly manage multiple task assignments and other corporate priorities, often in parallel
  • Maintain a positive attitude, looking for creative ways to provide incremental value, solve problems and reach success criteria.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant technologies, software development methodologies, and programming languages
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of object-oriented design/development in a real-time environment
  • Comprehensive understanding of regulatory standards impact on software development
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of software unit, component, and integration testing
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of source code management and defect tracking
  • Ability to effectively utilize both written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify complex problems and provide multiple solutions
  • Ability to understand, create, and communicate complex design specifications
  • Ability to quickly and effectively breakdown assignments into work tasks and provide effort and schedule estimates and successfully achieve them
  • Ability to use judgment and logic in decision-making considering relative costs and benefits of potential actions
  • Ability to promote corporate ethics and exhibit a spirit of teamwork and cooperation within the organization
  • Understanding and ability to implement Agile and Scrum methodologies, valuing procedures and principles.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and highly effective at collaboration.
  • Experience with C# and Visual Studio required (Java experience a potential substitute)
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance, which requires US citizenship

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and a minimum of 9 years of experience of real-time object-oriented commercial or government software development experience.
  • Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Skills, Experience and Education:

  • Ability to understand and utilize UML (Unified Modeling Language)
  • Working knowledge of AI/ML algorithms
  • Background with moving map and video rendering technologies

Physical Demands:

  • Required to sit for long periods of time
  • Infrequent light physical effort required
  • Written and verbal communication
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse
  • May require the ability to travel via automobile or airplane

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • As required by program needs

Work Environment:

  • Work performed in an office environment with people close to each other
  • Working with computers, and other computer components
  • Duties may require being on call periodically and working outside of normal working hours (evenings and weekends)
  • Travel 10-20% to support demonstrations or customer events
