Come join the City of Virginia Beach Public Works team as a Custodial Worker! We are hiring dedicated Custodial Workers to help maintain the cleanliness and functionality of our facilities.
In this role, your assigned work hours are Monday – Friday 5:30am until 2:00pm. You will be expected to be available outside of your assigned hours as needed and report to work during emergencies, in accordance with City Policy for Alpha 1 - Essential Personnel. You may be designated as an Alpha 1 employee and required to report to work during emergencies as required by City Policy.
As a Custodial Worker with the City of Virginia Beach, you will not have an assigned permanent location. You will be assigned to the same area most days; however, there will be occasions when you are reassigned or asked to help with additional duties. It is expected that you will satisfactorily perform the following duties in all assigned areas:
- Satisfactorily clean the area you are assigned each day.
- Correct, in a timely manner, any issues presented to you on an inspection report or verbally from anyone in your chain of supervision.
- Treat your co-workers and supervisors with respect.
- Drive a City owned vehicle to deliver supplies to facilities, able to lift 50+ lbs.
- Vacuum and extract carpet using an industrial type vacuum to remove dirt and debris from the nap of the carpet.
- Clean, buff, strip, and wax resilient floors (terrazzo tile, VCT, Ceramic, etc.) to remove dirt, debris and residue. Cleaning involves, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing.
- Dust furniture, file cabinets, shelves, woodwork, and similar items with a treated cloth to remove dust.
- Wash windows, sills, blinds, etc., to remove dirt and dust.
- Empty trash and recycle material, removing it from the facility to outside receptacle or dumpster.
- Clean restroom fixtures, walls and floors with a germicidal disinfectant to remove bacterial germs and odors.
- Polish furniture and brass with a treated cloth and polish to create a glossy, non-oily appearance.
- Clean vents, light fixtures, and other high areas. May require use of a ladder.
- Open and unlock city buildings before working hours.
- Set-up and ensure meeting areas are properly prepared for scheduled events.
- Any other duties as assigned by your Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements
Requires completion of a standard grade school course or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with such positions as janitor, custodian, or custodial worker. Valid driver’s license.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
Preferences
3 years of recent custodial experience
3 years of customer service experience
Experience providing custodial service in a professional office setting
Experience cleaning commercial restrooms
Bloodborne Pathogen and Chemical Safety Experience
