Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director Division of Human Genetics Department of Pediatrics. The genetic counselor will join a team of Clinical Geneticists and genetic counselors who see patients primarily in the pediatric and adult settings in General Genetics Clinic Metabolic Clinic and Cancer Genetics Clinic in addition to evolving specialty clinics in Cardiogenetics and Neurogenetics. Responsibilities include providing genetic counseling services follow-up and coordination of care for patients with a personal and/or family history of genetic conditions participate and coordinate in research activities and serve as a supervisor for genetic counseling students. This role has the potential for educational responsibilities including teaching first year medical students medical residents and non-genetics health care providers.
Responsibilities
Coordinates and provides genetic counseling services at Hospital site and satellite clinics; arranges for special laboratory and diagnostic studies as requested by consulting physician.
Interviews clients and reviews medical records to investigate medical history and construct pedigrees; researches syndromes and medical conditions prior to patient counseling.
Work closely with Department of Health related to newborn screening program.
Provides for public education by speaking to professional and nonprofessional groups making arrangements for and participating in media presentations developing and distributing brochures public service announcements and videotapes participating in health fairs and responding to a variety of individual s requests for information.
Maintains case records and writes summary letters to clients documenting findings and interpretations.
Participates in assigned committees dealing with education research follow up etc.
May assist in preparation of variety of written reports such as funding grants manuscripts and program reports.
Maintains and enhances professional expertise through appropriate educational activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Other Information
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Master�s degree in Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited training program.
American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) board certified. If the applicant is not board certified he/she must be actively pursuing board certification and must be certified within one year after hiring.
State of Rhode Island genetics counseling license required upon hire.
Knowledge of biological sciences necessary to understand interpret and discuss a wide range of birth defects and medical conditions in the provision of genetic counseling services.
Analytical and numerical skills necessary to evaluate program development interpret pedigrees calculate and predict probability of genetic risk factors and apply simple statistical tests on data.
Interpersonal skills to deal with a wide range of professional and lay people in Hospital and community.
Counseling skills to deal with clients about complicated and often distressing information.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Experience
Two years experience in genetic counseling and exposure to patients with genetic problems- preferred.
Work Environment And Physical Requirements
Normal office environment with some exposure to patient environment.
