Laboratory Services Supervisor

General Summary: The Laboratory Supervisor performs a variety of diagnostic laboratory tests that are intended to assist with improving the overall status of patients by providing accurate laboratory results. The Laboratory Supervisor is actively involved in department activities, transdisciplinary team activities, and LifeCare activities to ensure individualized, patient-centered health care for all patient populations admitted to LifeCare Hospital.

Patient Population: Has contact with patients in a clinical setting; understands and demonstrates appropriate behavior when interacting with patients in the adult (18-65 yrs of age) and geriatric (65 and older) populations.

Supervision: Supervises the employees and the activities of the lab department.

• Adheres to LifeCare policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.

Job-Specific Essential Functions

• Assists the Laboratory Manager in supervising and consulting with laboratory staff involved in patient care and works in collaboration with leadership to enhance department’s ability to meet patient’s needs through proper assessment and investigation of special situations, and implementation and evaluation of decided action plans.
• Verifies accuracy of charges for billing purposes and submit charges timely. Assists the Manager in reviewing and approving vendor invoices.
• Assists manager in reviewing and maintaining records of all procedures and compiles reports. Performs QA audits and Provides analysis of CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) data; Assists Manager in making appropriate recommendations and follows up with the Director of Quality Management and Administrator if necessary.
• Assists Manager in scheduling and adjusts staffing as necessary, arranging, and approving overtime and/or unscheduled shifts, if necessary. Calls in relief staff and maintains on-call schedule (if needed) for department.
• Assists Manager with the initial and ongoing training of laboratory and nursing staff during hospital orientation and during scheduled in-services.
• Maintains, calibrates, and submits requests for the repair of all laboratory equipment in accordance with policies, directives, and good clinical practice. Assists Manager during implementation and validation of new test methods, control lots, etc., and evaluates related data (i.e., calibration curve, Levey Jennings graph). Institutes and completes the required records and reports and maintains compliance with appropriate State, local and other regulatory agencies.
