The Department of Economics within the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences is seeking applicants for its Student Services Advisor II (internal title: Master’s Programs Advisor) position. The Student Services Advisor II will primarily service students in the Department’s Master of Arts and Master of Science programs. The Department plans to significantly grow its MS program over the next five years, and the advisor will play a pivotal role in this effort.
The Department has consistently been ranked among the best economics programs in the country, and services the largest student population within Dornsife. Faculty in the Department and alumni are recognized as leaders in their respective areas of study, and the Department has many notable alumni.
Qualifications
The ideal applicant for the position would have demonstrated skills and interest in academic advisement and program management.
Job Responsibilities
The responsibilities for the position include providing extensive advising and program support for a busy academic department. The position is responsible for advisement, maintenance of student records, data collection and reports, curriculum development, and management of day-to-day activities within the Department – including student counseling, scholarships, and troubleshooting. The support functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Organize and manage admissions processes
- Counsel and advise prospective students on admissions, financial aid, visa, and academic requirements
- Provide advisement for graduate students enrolled in programs and courses offered by the Department
- Serve as liaison to relevant campus offices (e.g. degree progress, the graduate school, graduate admission, and registration) to assure timely completion of student degrees and provide relevant reports and petitions
- Assist in the general administration of the Department of Economics
- Lead recruitment efforts
- Developing and marketing the Department’s new MS program
- Manage curriculum changes and attend curriculum committee meetings
- Track the placement of graduates
- Organize special events such as distinguished speaker series and assist in other events and ceremonies for the division including graduation
Compensation
The hourly rate range for this position is $34 - $40. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
Successful candidates will have strong communication and organizational skills, administrative and event planning experience, as well as a genuine interest in working with students, staff and faculty involved in the field of economics. Ability to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment, as well as flexibility in the face of changing priorities and fluctuating workloads is critical.
