Description Of Position
- The Histology Technician prepares histologic and cytologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the Pathologist.
- Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimen from surgery.
- Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
- Assists physician with fine needle aspiration procedures.
- Enters patient and testing information into Histology computer systems.
- Files and retrieves blocks and slides as required.
- Disposes of specimens according to policies and procedures.
- Performs quality control as required.
Education And Work Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- One year clinical histology tech experience preferred.
- Basic computer skills; Able to operate mathematical machinery such as calculators and computers.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Mental competence and alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements; clear, concise, pleasant speaking abilities; accurate hearing is essential; visual acuity is a must; stability of emotional make up is essential.
