GENERAL SUMMARY: In collaboration with the Director, the Hygiene Supervisor will provide administrative support, direct supervision, identify/implement workflow/efficiency improvements, monitor/evaluate programs, staff training and coordinate community-based dental prevention programs.

Essential Job Functions

Administrative:

  • Identify and implement approved methods to improve workflow and efficiency of the department.
  • Submit quarterly KOHA reports and invoices to state and local health departments.
  • Oversee assigned programs/activities and assist in identifying departmental goals and objectives.
  • In collaboration with the Director, assure that patient concerns and/or complaints are investigated and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a liaison with community partners to further the mission and goals of the department and coordinate programming for community-based prevention programs.
  • Ensure that operating policies/procedures are communicated, followed, and assigned staff work collaboratively towards achieving departmental goals and objectives.
  • Chair or co-chair monthly clinical meetings for assigned staff and prepare agenda/minutes.
  • Prepare various administrative reports as requested.
  • Complete and submit PA161 application and mobile dental permit renewal application.


Supervision:

  • Provide direct supervision, evaluate and counsel assigned dental hygienists and Oral Health Promotions Coordinator.
  • Schedule and coordinate one-on-one meetings with staff.
  • In collaboration with the Director, interview and recommend hiring/termination, and provide orientation/training of assigned staff.
  • Work with the staff to maintain adequate workload, staffing and client scheduling.
  • Accurately complete employee time-off requests, time sheets, and record keeping of the same.


Continuous Quality Improvement:

  • Review assigned programs/activities and procedures to ensure that progress is being made toward specific MCHC and departmental standards.
  • Recommend strategies to increase effectiveness and enhance provision and quality of services to target population.
  • Participate in the departmental QIT process.


Training:

  • Organizes and/or provides orientation and necessary training for new staff members.
  • Assists in organizing and/or providing additional training on various topics including computerized patient information system.
  • Provides clinical training and technical assistance for community-based prevention programs.


Other Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical dental hygiene duties as needed.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  • Requires a minimum of an associate’s degree from an accredited dental hygiene program.
  • Current Registered Dental Hygienist license to practice dental hygiene in the State of Michigan required.
  • Three years of post-educational dental hygiene experience, working under the direction of a licensed dentist required.
  • Current certification in CPR required.
  • Must have two years of progressively more responsible supervisory experience in a dental setting. (A current MCHC Associate employed by MCHC for five or more years may be considered for the position with the additional supervisory experience waived.)
  • Computer Skill Level Requirement:
  • Basic - Microsoft Outlook.
  • Intermediate - Microsoft Word, Excel
  • EHR/EDR/EPM including digital radiographs for data collection and reporting.
  • Able to understand and use dental and medical terminology and have the ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate programs/projects.
  • Must have a high degree of communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with administration, associates, community agency personnel, consultants, clients, and visitors.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal dental office environment with little discomfort due to noise, aerosols, fumes, dust, or temperature.
  • Requires physical activity including sitting, standing, walking and occasional lifting of children and equipment.
  • Risk of infection or body fluid contamination from a patient is relatively low, although such risks do exist. The adherence to safety procedures and Universal Precautions for infection control minimizes risks and hazards.
  • Possible exposure to x-ray, nitrous oxide, or other anesthetic gases.
  • Occasionally may cause emotional stress from treating young pediatric patients as well as mentally and physically impaired individuals.
  • Risk Category A - Job functions involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
