Position Summary:
This role is responsible for safely driving a commercial truck within the transportation yard for unloading/loading of trailers and delivering product to local specified customers. For yard driving, determine trailer requirements/types for outbound loads and move trailers to appropriate docks. For local driving, deliver product, assist with unloading, verify accuracy of delivery, complete necessary paperwork, and pick up return products for the distribution center. Perform routine vehicle inspection and operate the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner, in compliance with DOT regulations.
Here’s what you’ll do:
- Drive a commercial truck within the transportation yard for unloading/loading of trailers and to deliver products to local specified customers; communicate with supervisors, dispatchers, and warehouse personnel as appropriate.
- Maintain the yard in an orderly manner; ensure the yard fueling station is clean, and tractors and trailers are positioned correctly.
- Conduct yard checks of trailers and complete trailer inventory to maintain control of all trailers.
- Operate commercial truck to move and reposition trailers to and from loading docks.
- Secure trailer doors and ensure loads are secure.
- Deliver products to local customers, assist with unloading, verify delivery accuracy, and obtain customer signatures.
- Inform warehouse associates of invoice discrepancies and handle damaged customer return products.
- Report unsafe loading conditions and notify transportation dispatcher/supervisor of any equipment issues.
- Perform pre-trip inspections on vehicles to ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
- Maintain a safe work environment following safety guidelines.
- Perform post-trip duties, including fueling, securing the vehicle, and completing DOT logs.
- Carry out simple vehicle maintenance and coordinate routine maintenance and repairs.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- High school diploma or GED (preferred)
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (required)
- Six months or 50,000 miles of commercial driving experience (required)
- Must pass DOT physical examination and drug test, subject to random tests.
- Ability to work up to 60 hours per week, including nights and weekends.
- Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Good customer service skills.
- Ability to read maps and operate vehicles in various conditions.
- Knowledge of federal regulations and DOT guidelines.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings and weekends.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands include lifting/moving up to 100 pounds, pushing/pulling loaded pallets, sitting for extended periods, and climbing in and out of the truck. Overnight travel may be required. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions and operates in a vehicle environment subject to varying noise levels.
