Reporting to the Director of Patient Safety & Risk Management, the Patient Safety Program Manager is responsible for the assessment and monitoring of patient safety projects and programs at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This role primarily is responsible for implementation and management of standard and ad hoc programs related to patient safety (e.g. Just Culture, Annual Patient Safety Goals, Safety Education and Communication, etc.). This position will also lead and support patient safety projects and provides consultation and support to all DFCI locations.

This position’s work location is hybrid with two or three days per week remote. The selected candidate may only work remote days from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI).

  • Lead and support patient safety and clinical improvement projects across DFCI and the network to ensure safe, effective and patient-centered quality of care.
  • Ongoing refinement and maintenance of clinical standards for DFCI network sites, based on national guidelines and standards and guidance from DFCI colleagues.
  • Participate in evaluations of sites under consideration for membership in the DFCI network, as needed, focusing on adherence to quality and patient safety standards. Evaluations will include site visits.
  • Review and analyze safety reports for all DFCI network locations.
  • Conduct investigations into events and near misses.
  • Use data derived from safety reports and investigations to identify and prioritize improvements.
  • Partner with Health Systems Improvement to enhance system safety and process standardization.
  • Collaborate with the Quality and Patient Safety Department staff on improvement projects, accreditation review, data collection and analysis, and root cause analyses.
  • Support Executive Patient Safety Rounds to obtain feedback from staff regarding patient safety concerns.
  • Provide clinical expertise in the advancement of patient safety initiatives throughout the Institute.
  • Analyze and code safety reporting data for the Institute submitted through the DFCI safety reporting system and identify opportunities to improve patient safety.
  • Collaborate and support risk management and infection control teams with committees and improvement initiatives.
  • 5 years of professional experience in a healthcare setting required; 1 year of experience in patient safety, risk management, clinical/regulatory affairs, and/or quality improvement preferred.
  • Clinician (MD, RN, NP, PA, PharmD) preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in diverse oncology practice settings (e.g., community hospitals, private practices, academic medical centers) strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of nationally recognized quality and patient safety standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management ability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a team member.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
