Description

Job Summary: The ECMO Nurse Coordinator focuses on the nursing-specific aspects of ECMO care, including staff education, patient preparation, and family support. The nurse navigator assists in expanding the ECMO program through community outreach and education. The Nurse Navigator collaborates closely with the ECMO Medical Director, RT ECMO Coordinator, Nursing leadership and multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes and the seamless integration of nursing expertise within the ECMO program.

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years ICU experience

Preferred:

  • Minimum 1-year ECMO Experience, nursing education experience or program development experience.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration

Required:

  • CCRN

Department Position Summary

Nursing Education & Staff Development

  • Develop and deliver nursing-specific ECMO education programs, focusing on patient preparation, ongoing care, and post-decannulation needs.
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of multidisciplinary ECMO simulation training, acting as the nursing expert and ensuring comprehensive educational support for nursing staff across high-stake scenarios.
  • Serve as a mentor to ECMO nurses, supporting professional development and the onboarding of new staff.
  • Coordinate annual nursing competencies for ECMO care in collaboration with the ECMO Coordinator.
  • Provide guidance, remediation, and education to nursing staff and management regarding documentation deficiencies, ensuring compliance with institutional policies.

Patient and Family Support

  • Provide nursing-led patient and family education on ECMO therapy, with an emphasis on care coordination, preparation, and expectations.
  • Act as a consistent point of contact for families, offering emotional support and guidance throughout the ECMO journey.
  • Lead efforts to standardize and improve nursing workflows for ECMO patient preparation and decannulation.
  • Serve as a vital intermediary between ECMO patients, their families, and the care team, ensuring that the emotional aspects of the care and communication are continuously addressed, both during treatment and in the follow-up period.

Community Outreach & Regional Networking

  • Coordinate community education initiatives to raise awareness about ECMO therapy and the hospital's program capabilities in collaboration with business development.
  • Collaborate with regional hospitals to provide nursing-specific ECMO education and strengthen referral relationships.
  • Participate in local and regional conferences, representing the nursing perspective on ECMO care.
  • Assist in the development and growth of the ECMO program by identifying opportunities to increase referral volume and strengthen the hospital's regional presence in collaboration with business development.

Program Development & Operational Support

  • Assist in creating and maintaining standardized nursing protocols and checklists for ECMO patient care.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining readiness kits for nursing responsibilities in cannulation and decannulation processes.
  • Collaborate with the ECMO Coordinator on policy development, ensuring alignment with ELSO guidelines while emphasizing nursing contributions.
  • Attend ECMO committee meetings and ECMO provider meetings to support program development and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Media and Public Relations Coordination

  • Support the marketing and PR team by staying in contact with ECMO patients and families to assist with sharing and highlighting success stories.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Serve as the nursing liaison within the ECMO team, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration across disciplines.
  • Participate in ECMO rounds, debriefs, and committee meetings, advocating for nursing perspectives on patient care and program development.

Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with ECMO technology, patient care, and communication best practices for nursing staff.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage patients, families, and staff effectively.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering nursing education programs.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and high-quality care.
  • Strong organizational skills for coordinating education, outreach, and operational tasks.
