Behavioral Health Counselor

POSITION SUMMARY: Provides psychiatric and chemical dependency clinical services for all BHS programs and services, including intake and initial assessments, primarily in the Emergency Room and Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit. Responsibilities include pre-admission screening, crisis intervention, collaboration on diagnosis and treatment planning, and delivery of psychosocial services. Conducts utilization reviews and discharge planning when assigned to the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Master's Degree in a behavioral health or relevant field from an accredited school.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Licensed to practice independently in New Mexico as an LMFT, LPAT, LPCC, LISW, LCSW, Psychologist, or Advanced Practice Nurse. Completion of aggression management course within 2 months, BLS within 6 months.

• Understanding of complex psychopathology and crisis intervention.
• Ability to negotiate with community providers and insurers.
• Strong clinical and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to lead therapy sessions.
• Understanding of recovery process and treatment planning.
• Flexibility with job assignments.
• Proficient in English.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum three years clinical experience in behavioral health, with at least one year in crisis assessment/intake. Recent inpatient experience preferred.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION: Responsible to: Director or designee, BHS

ENVIRONMENT:

• Bloodborne pathogen B

Exposure to infectious diseases and potential hazards. Normal heat, light, and air conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to cope with stress and physical demands of inpatient work. Emergency lifting and physical interventions may be required. Scheduled on-call duties with short notice and emergency basis work.
