The Opportunity

The Director will be responsible for the strategy, execution and measurement of US product and therapy area communications in alignment with business objectives. The Director will work cross-functionally to deliver integrated communications strategies that deliver for our marketed portfolio and set the stage for future launches.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and execute integrated external product communications strategy, narrative and execution across various therapy areas, marketed brands, new indications and assets in late-stage development.
  • Implement end-to-end communications plans leveraging earned media, sponsored content, social media and owned media channels to engage a variety of external stakeholders, e.g. media, patients, HCPs, consumers, policymakers, advocacy partners and other external stakeholders. Ensure consistent messaging and engagement across all channels, including for internal audiences.
  • Provide strategic communications counsel and collaborate with cross-functional business partners, including commercial, medical, regulatory, legal, and advocacy.
  • Develop and support media strategy, possess top-tier media relationships, engage therapy area journalists, proactively identify cross portfolio media angles and themes and manage high-stakes crisis communications.
  • When necessary, serve as company spokesperson, train company spokespeople for media interviews, and partner with Global Media Relations, Corporate Communications and Pharma Comms to ensure alignment and consistent messaging.
  • Measure outcomes and KPIs of communications plans, programs and campaigns to achieve maximum impact.
  • Responsible for therapy area budget while exercising good financial stewardship.
  • Oversee multiple PR agencies with clear direction, ensuring that agency partners are focused on work that drives impact and delivering measurable results.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; ideally in communications or related field. Advanced degree desirable.
  • 10-12 years of experience within communications or public relations with 5+ years of in-house experience preferred.
  • Deep understanding of the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry or health care.
  • Meaningful experience in social and digital media, earned media relations, issues management and internal communications.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with the ability to truly understand business challenges and priorities and develop actionable programs that integrate soundly with business objectives.
  • Passion for the role, paired with strong written, spoken and interpersonal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to productively navigate a challenging and dynamic environment and adapt to rapid changes.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and planning skills.
  • Collaboratively work with a diverse group of people and backgrounds.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit, enthusiasm and creativity.
  • Experience in creating and translating scientific and technical content for a broad range of audiences.
  • Requires about 25 to 35% travel.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $159,400.00 – $296,000.00. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position is eligible to earn incentive compensation that is calculated and paid in accordance with the applicable Incentive Compensation Plan for the role.
