About The Role

  • The Environmental Engineer with be responsible for providing technical support for continued facility compliance with state and federal environmental regulations and permitting requirements in accordance with corporate and local environmental procedures. The position will generally serve as a subject matter expert in at least one environmental media (air, water, waste) with current emphasis being waste. The position will be responsible for overseeing and optimizing waste management at our chemical production facility, including hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, and universal waste. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of environmental regulations, waste treatment technologies, and a proven track record of managing waste programs while successfully implementing reduction and minimization strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage site-wide solid and hazardous waste program, including profiling, handling, shipments, tracking, training, procedures, and directing others on material movements/transfers
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive waste management systems in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., RCRA, TSCA).
  • Manage the lifecycle of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, from generation and characterization to storage, treatment, transportation, and disposal.
  • Oversee waste characterization and profiling to ensure proper handling and disposal methods.
  • Collaborate with production teams to identify opportunities for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.
  • Build and maintain relationships internally and externally for functional areas and serve on company committees as required
  • Develop a thorough, practical knowledge of regulatory and corporate requirements to serve as a subject matter expert in assigned areas.
  • Oversee site groundwater program compliance
  • Work independently and prioritize responsibilities for assigned functions
  • Participate in company audits and regulatory inspections for assigned media
  • Support other department roles, including service in other environmental areas as backup
  • Evaluate and implement waste treatment technologies and process improvements to minimize environmental impact and reduce disposal costs.
  • Prepare and submit required environmental reports, permits applications, and other documentation as necessary (e.g., annual reports, waste manifests).
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of waste management facilities and practices to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and deliver relevant training programs to facility personnel. so that environmental regulatory and company responsibilities are communicated.
  • Manage relationships with waste disposal contractors and vendors.
  • Assist with incident investigation as it relates to Environmental considerations.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in environmental regulations and best practices in waste management.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the facility's overall environmental management system (EMS).
  • Work with affected departments to create/maintain Environmental policies, systems, and processes that meet or exceed the regulatory and company requirements with a focus on multimedia environmental considerations
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of facility Environmental system metrics and identify improvement opportunities for implementation
  • Assure adequate procedures and systems are in place for compliance and as contributions to other department standard operating procedures and practices
  • Review environmental data to identify any environmental non-compliance issues and/or identify potential non-compliance issues and provide recommendations for resolution.
  • Prepare timely submission of regulatory application(s), notifications, or other relevant correspondence as required.
  • Complete other functions as assigned by Environmental Manager or Supervisor

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years (10+ years preferred) of experience in environmental engineering, with a strong focus on waste management, preferably in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to waste management (e.g., RCRA, TSCA, HWC MACT).
  • Experience with hazardous waste management, including characterization, treatment, storage, and disposal.
  • Knowledge of multimedia regulatory requirements specific to waste treatment units managing halogenated streams desired.
  • Familiarity with waste minimization and pollution prevention techniques.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience with environmental permitting and reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
