Job Summary

Provides oversight of the activities on a nursing unit during a specific shift including serving as a resource to staff, directing patient flow, precepting or mentoring staff, assuring appropriate utilization of resources, and providing oversight for quality care provision.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties included in the registered nurse job description.
  • Evaluates nursing practice in relation to professional standards, identifying short and long-term goals.
  • Maintains current knowledge, serves as a resource on departmental policies, and assists in education and compliance.
  • Assists in finding creative solutions to issues and contributes to process and quality improvement.
  • Utilizes ANA scope and standards of practice and the code of ethics for nurses as foundations.
  • Mentors others in competency, documentation, equipment use, and National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Coordinates patient flow with timely and effective care.
  • Expedites admission process for ready beds when assigned.
  • Participates in daily rounds and ensures staff are working within their scope.
  • Performs routine environment of care rounds and facilitates resolution of issues.
  • Assures patient privacy and confidentiality on the unit.
  • Assists in assuring appropriate utilization of supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares staff schedules, oversees staffing for shift, and makes patient assignments efficiently.
  • Regularly attends hospital-wide bed meetings.
  • Assists with hiring, onboarding, orientating, and evaluating staff.
  • Establishes effective work relationships with staff and supports satisfaction goals.
  • Maintains professional communication with physicians, other departments, and community members.
  • Provides departmental leadership in the absence of the unit director/manager/supervisor.
  • Role model for teamwork, fills beds, and facilitates admissions.
  • Assists in providing positive impressions to patients and visitors.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of nursing science, principles, and techniques for patient care.
  • Knowledge of healthcare terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Skill in critical thinking for effective and compassionate nursing care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
  • 1-year nursing experience in the specialty or previous charge nurse experience.
  • Current registered nurse license in Alaska.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Specialty certification applicable to position.
