This position requires being onsite at our Tysons or Alexandria offices 4 days a week. This individual is managing an operation in place 24/7, therefore flexibility to be available as needed before/after normal business hours is expected.

About the role:


We're seeking a Director, Road Network Operations to lead the road network operations team and optimize network performance across the Greater Washington express lanes.


You'll join an innovative team, who identifies and evaluates options for improving the technology systems, on-road performance, safety, and efficiency of the Express Lanes network.

Day-to-day, you will:
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Road Network Operations team to ensure they maximize the use of resources, skills, systems and processes to deliver the tactical day-to-day operation of the road network.
  • Responsible for Transurban's Road safety program, ensuring Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract compliance requirements are met.
  • Lead initiatives to assess the viability of new and innovative technology solutions to improve customer experience, road network operations, safety and commercial outcomes.
  • Lead, guide and oversee to the continuous improvement program of Road Network Operations, motorist safety, and road safety function.
  • Actively seek to identify optimization projects that provide revenue enhancement and cost saving opportunities for existing assets.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to understand and analyze network optimization frameworks that provide insights for improvements to be identified and implemented.
  • Monitor control room operations and proper execution of Incident Management Plans, ensuring that emergencies and road incidents are attended to within agreed parameters.
  • Partner with the dynamic pricing management team in balancing road network operations and revenue objectives.
  • Build and foster strong relationships with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), law enforcement and first responders for day-to-day operations and long-term strategic positioning.

  • 10+ years relevant experience in the transportation sector, primarily in business operations or emergency management fields.
  • Extensive experience in the identification and development of solutions to improve performance in transit, including understanding of transportation layouts.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, written and communication skills, working at senior management levels.
  • High level of business acumen, sound financial skills, including commercial contract management experience.
  • Ability to establish, motivate, and lead a high performing team to meet performance requirements.
  • Ability to reason logically and practically during emergencies and in high stress environments.
  • Sound mentoring and people management experience.
  • Strong stakeholder management, engagement, and influencing skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Logistics Management, Business Administration, or relevant field of study, preferred.
