The Equipment Operator performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of the Putah South Canal (PSC) and District distribution laterals and pipelines. This position operates heavy equipment, including excavators, graders, backhoes, and boom trucks, to execute excavation, trenching, grading, and soil work necessary for infrastructure maintenance and project completion. The Equipment Operator works both independently and collaboratively with small teams to transport, position, and operate specialized machinery, ensuring safe and efficient execution of tasks. Responsibilities also include performing routine equipment maintenance, assisting with mechanical repairs, and responding to emergency repairs as needed.


The ideal candidate will have extensive experience operating a variety of heavy equipment, with a strong understanding of excavation techniques, safety protocols, and maintenance procedures. They will demonstrate excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, particularly in navigating challenging terrain and complex excavation projects. A successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively in a team environment, provide leadership and training to peers, and adapt to changing priorities, including after-hours emergency response and scheduled stand-by duties.

Salary Information

The base salary for this position ranges from $75,545.60 to $91,873.60.


The District is in the process of including qualifying licenses and certifications for this position, pending final approval by the Board of Directors. Upon approval, employees will have the opportunity to earn between $79,227.20 and $106,412.80, based on the number of licenses and certifications they possess.


The available certification options include:


  • Tanker Vehicle Endorsement (N) – Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Training
  • California State Water Resources Control Board Grade Level D-2
  • ACWA JPIA Operations Certification


Qualifications

Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above and the ability to perform the duties of the position.

 

Experience: Three (3) years of operating heavy equipment and two (2) years of laboring experience, including familiarity with the operation of heavy construction or maintenance equipment and hand and power tools common to a mechanical, metal or building trade. 


Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Technical training in equipment operations preferred.

 

Licenses and Certification:

  • Possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record to maintain insurability. 
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within nine (9) months of date of hire, valid Boom Truck Certification. 
  • Possession and maintenance of a Grade Level 2 - Distribution Operator Certificate (D2) issued by the State of California State Water Resources Control Board is preferred.
