Job Summary
The Coordinator of Competitive Sports & Camps oversees and manages all competitive sports programming and assists with the Healthy Herd Youth Camp program. This position will manage up to 30 part-time staff, and 1-2 interns.
This position will work on-site at our Marshall University client location in downtown Huntington, recently ranked as one of the 150 Best Places to Live in the U.S. Marshall University is a public comprehensive university with a rich history as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in West Virginia. Founded in 1837 and named after Chief Justice John Marshall, definer of the Constitution, Marshall University advances the public good through innovative, accredited educational programs.

Job Summary

Essential Functions
- Train officiating mechanics and game management skills; Demonstrate and teach conflict and risk management skills
- Develop and communicate intramural sport rules and program participation policies and procedures
- Supervise competitive sport contests and provide staff with on-site evaluations
- Communicate with campers parent/guardians
- Manage and inventory of all camp, intramural and PEL sport equipment and supplies
- Monitor team rosters, eligibility, and schedules for intramural and club teams
- Encourage and support intramural teams, officials, and club sports competition travel
- Evaluate and assess program performance and effectiveness
- Ensure accuracy and timely updates of all scheduling/marketing platforms and revise/approve marketing publications and handbooks
- Ensure programs are in line with current industry trends
- Responsible for operating, preparing, forecasting, and monitoring income and expense budgets related to the program area
- Prepares and delivers required and requested reports and data to the client and CENTERS central office
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate part-time student employees; Mentor, develop, and coach part-time staff
- Responsible for approving timecards and preparing necessary documents/reports for bi-weekly payroll
- Assist Associate Director with Healthy Herd Youth Camp programming and management during its active operation
- Assist with staffing and lesson planning for Physical Education and Leisure (PEL) classes that fall within program area
- Manage budget, strategic planning, and assessment for the program area
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or 4 or more years of work experience required
- Experience working in higher education, recreation, or sports
- Demonstrated experience in managing and organizing intramurals, sport clubs and/or camps
- Officiating experience preferred
- Leadership and supervisory abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; confidence speaking with a variety of constituents and stakeholders
- Ability to work as part of, and lead a team that collaborates effectively with colleagues
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm
- Analytical skills to: identify problems, assess alternatives, and render consistent, logical decisions
- Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyle choices
Work Environment
- Office, indoor and outdoor sporting, and non-sporting events environment
- Non-smoking environment
- Moderate to loud noise
- Maintain flexible hours for occasional sporting and other events that may occur on weekends and evenings
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 70% of the work day
- Consistently operates a computer and office equipment
- Walking or working with natatorium and sport facilities 30% of the work day
- Must be able to traverse throughout the building and campus. Must be able to match speed of movement to game play. Regularly ascending/descending building levels and occasionally ladders or stools.
- Must be able to lift, move and set up items weighing as much as 50 lbs.
- Must be able to discuss, converse with, and exchange accurate information with arena patrons, staff, stakeholders, etc.
