Job Description

Primitives Biodesign is seeking a Materials Scientist to support research and development in materials science, mineral processing, and chemical engineering. This is a full-time position based in Berkeley, CA, with flexibility for remote work. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in material characterization techniques and hands-on materials processing experience.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct R&D on material properties and processing methods related to biomineralization and sustainable materials.
• Perform materials characterization using techniques such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, XRD, SEM/EDS, and Instron testing.
• Analyze and interpret experimental data to inform product development.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance material performance and scalability.
• Maintain laboratory safety protocols and best practices.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Extensive hands-on experience in materials characterization and analysis.
• Proficiency in FTIR, DSC, TGA, XRD, SEM/EDS, and Instron testing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively in a team environment.
• Bonus: Experience with manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and digital fabrication.
• Passion for sustainability, biomaterials, and circular economy solutions.

The Role

• Contract position, with possibility of extension
• Hybrid work flexibility, with in-person lab work in Berkeley, CA.
