A Brief Overview
The VP, North America Portfolio Management leads the interaction and value creation with our third-party asset managers, the governance, due diligence, and performance assessment of RGA’s external asset managers. The leader collaborates with internal stakeholders, including RGA’s businesses, Investment Solutions, Risk, Compliance, Legal, and Operations, to build efficient and value-added portfolios and optimize third-party relationships. Responsibilities also include structuring and efficiency of use for RGA’s asset holdings within global regulatory environments.

Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. Responsibilities
- Leadership and execution. RGA Investments is an integral part of RGA’s dynamic business and growth strategy. To maintain a sustainable competitive edge and lead on scaling of our global platform requires delivering results now, aligning organizational design to strategy, hiring and developing talent, and a focus on continuous improvement of our capabilities, data, systems, processes, skills, and global business planning.
- Value Creation. Focus on maximizing returns and aligning with the company's strategic goals. This involves assessing external managers' strengths and customizing their capabilities to fit RGA's needs. The role demands a deep understanding of RGA's business model, enabling collaboration with senior leadership to develop impactful investment strategies. Leading the team in strategy execution ensures alignment with RGA's objectives. This position also serves as a knowledge center, providing expertise on external asset managers and industry trends, positioning RGA at the forefront of market developments and opportunities.
- Portfolio Management. Encompass a comprehensive role within the Global Portfolio Management team, contributing to strategic asset allocation, new investment strategies, income projections, and planning. This position oversees and shapes the strategic direction and daily management of North American and Offshore legal entity strategies. Leveraging a network of internal and external contacts, along with deep knowledge of investments and Asset-Liability Management (ALM), the role generates valuable recommendations within established guidelines. It involves close collaboration with the asset liability management team for strategy implementation and extends across investment leadership and various investment areas. This cross-functional interaction is crucial for enhancing RGA's overall investment strategy and maximizing the value of its investment capabilities.
- Third-Party Value Creation & Engagement. Works closely with third-party asset managers to deliver excellent results, capitalize on opportunities, and ensure alignment with RGA's portfolio tactics and strategies. A key responsibility is negotiating contracts that strike an optimal balance between RGA's expenses and the value created by the asset manager. Additionally, this position leads comprehensive due diligence efforts for both new and existing asset managers, meticulously evaluating their investment strategies, operational capabilities, and risk management practices.
- Collaboration. Serves as a primary liaison between the firm and external asset managers, fostering strong, strategic partnerships. This position is responsible for negotiating contracts, fee structures, and terms to maximize value and ensure alignment with fiduciary standards. Working closely with investment teams, the role assesses manager fit within the broader portfolio strategy and identifies opportunities for optimization. A key aspect involves monitoring and reporting on peer company portfolio comparisons, suggesting strategic additions to maintain RGA's competitive advantage. Additionally, this role researches and delivers private asset financing or warehousing strategies, effectively promoting new business repositioning and transition.
- Risk & Compliance Oversight. Provides senior leadership with regular, comprehensive updates on manager performance, market trends, and strategic recommendations, ensuring informed decision-making at the highest levels. A key aspect involves ensuring that third-party managers strictly adhere to regulatory requirements, compliance policies, and industry best practices. The position partners closely with Risk and Compliance teams to monitor investment guidelines, operational risk exposures, and adherence to governance frameworks, creating a robust risk management environment. Proactive risk identification and escalation are paramount, with the role working alongside internal teams to mitigate issues before they become significant concerns. Additionally, this position stays abreast of evolving regulatory requirements, providing valuable advice on capital efficiency for both third-party and internally generated assets.
- Team member development and leadership. Leads, develops, and mentor members across the team while determining processes and resources needed to achieve enterprise goals and build high-performing teams focused on achieving superior results.
Education and Experience
- MBA graduate and 15+ years relevant work experience OR
- Bachelor's degree in economics/finance related field with 20+ years relevant work experience
- 7+ years of leadership experience
- 7+ years experience in investment management, asset manager oversight, or related fields within an institutional investment environment.
- 7+ years alternative investment experience
- Deep understanding of investment strategies across asset classes, including equities, fixed income, alternatives, and private markets
- Proven experience in negotiating investment management agreements and overseeing complex vendor relationships
- MBA or Master’s Degree in related fields
- CFA, CPA, FSA designation
Required
- Requires depth and/or breadth of knowledge of RGA’s interests and capabilities along with expert analytical and problem-solving skills
- Advanced ability to recognize opportunities which fit RGA’s target criteria
- Highly advanced understanding of investment/market concepts and highly advanced knowledge of portfolio and fixed income analytics (i.e. sector weightings, portfolio duration, performance attribution, convexity and term structure of interest rates)
- Advanced risk management and governance expertise
- Highly advanced negotiation and influencing skills to assist with internal/external discussions
- Highly advanced people management skills
- Expert oral and written English communication skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and networking skills, with the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders
- Proven leadership and team management capabilities with a commitment to developing team members. Ability to work independently and with multifunctioning teams as a leader
