The City of Wentzville is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Civil Engineer to join our team and contribute to the planning, design, and oversight of infrastructure improvements and development projects throughout our growing community.
The Senior Civil Engineer at the City of Wentzville will perform engineering design, field investigations, plan review, design contract and administration, project management and other engineering duties to maintain and improve all facets of city infrastructure. This position will oversee all new development projects within the city and ensure that all public improvements are constructed in compliance with applicable city standards. The Senior Civil Engineer will exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative when managing, leading, monitoring, and supervising projects to achieve goals that contribute to individual and organizational success.

Essential Job Duties

- Maintain a positive and productive environment, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the City, Department and Division.
- Lead and manage employees to contribute to achieving departmental and organizational goals, providing effective oversight and continuous feedback to staff members and ensuring that the team’s work aligns with the organization’s initiatives.
- Organize departmental programs and processes, set work priorities, and establish tasks for the team.
- Review all residential and commercial development plans and internal public works projects.
- Inspect all development projects to ensure the improvements are constructed according to federal, state, and city rules and standards.
- Provide engineering design and construction support to other City divisions and departments.
- Work closely with internal staff to ensure planned development projects meet city engineering standards and comply with city code.
- Develop new standards and procedures and update existing standards in the city engineering design criteria and specifications.
- Prepare and monitor the engineering budget, seeking program efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to supporting staff.
- Address engineering-related and infrastructure-related concerns from residents and businesses within the city.
- Serve as a subject matter expert within the organization, providing technical expertise to team members and guidance to address functional objectives, as required.
- Participate in simple and complex projects as required, contributing to multiple projects simultaneously as necessary.

- A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field is required.
- Additional experience in the field may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- A minimum of four years of experience in Civil Engineering, Public Works, Construction, or a similar work environment is required.
- Additional job-related advanced degrees or certifications may be considered in lieu of experience.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- A professional Engineer License within 12 months of employment is required.
- Thorough understanding of the design, construction and maintenance of public infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, sanitary sewer, and water distribution.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, hydrology, water quality, wastewater treatment, and water resources.
- Proficiency in use of basic business software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentations), AutoCAD Civil 3D, and ArcGIS software and basic knowledge of office equipment and machines.
- Ability to manage large-scale projects, programs, and processes.
- Credible professional, with the ability to influence decisions or outcomes outside of own department.
- Ability to conduct complex analysis, interpret and apply data to assist the organization, and recommend solutions to issues.
- Ability to assist in the resolution of complex problems, taking multiple variables into consideration.
- Ability to work both independently with limited oversight, and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Adaptable, agile learner, with the ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet goals and deadlines.
- Ability to provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
- Ability to manage and monitor division operations and services and implement procedural changes as needed to improve workflow and productivity.

- Proficiency in the use of basic business software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentations) and basic office equipment.
