Overview:

The Senior Buyer plays a key role in supporting the Purchasing Manager by ensuring that all purchasing activities flow smoothly and efficiently. In addition to writing purchase orders, the Senior Buyer will help oversee and support other buyers, ensuring they stay on track with procurement tasks and adhere to standard operating procedures. This role will also contribute to shaping purchasing strategies, identifying opportunities for process improvements, and assisting management in developing new workflows that enhance efficiency and effectiveness within the purchasing department.

Essential Functions

  • Procurement & Cost Management: 35%
  • Collaborates with project management and designs teams during job startup to identify buyout opportunities.
  • Assists project teams in creating accurate construction material takeoffs and inputs data into purchasing software to streamline procurement.
  • Audits material spend on projects, ensuring accuracy and identifying any pricing discrepancies.
  • Reports pricing discrepancies to the Purchasing Manager and ensures alignment with Alterman price files and current market pricing.
  • Ensures materials are purchased through Alterman’s Special Pricing Agreements (SPAs) whenever applicable.
  • Identifies opportunities for purchasing management to leverage volume for better pricing negotiations with vendors and manufacturers.
  • Processes requisitions and resolves invoice errors for assigned divisions.
  • Vendor & Supply Chain Management: 35%
  • Monitors vendor partnerships to ensure spending aligns with Alterman’s preferred terms and agreements as outlined by purchasing management.
  • Analyzes purchasing history and collaborates with vendors to ensure sufficient stock levels are maintained based on forecasted project needs.
  • Collects feedback from internal teams regarding vendor and purchasing performance and reports to management.
  • Process Improvement & Team Support: 30%
  • Identifies areas for improvement and recommends process changes to enhance efficiency within procurement operations.
  • Assists with training purchasing team and operation groups on purchasing SOPs and software systems.
  • Aids the Purchasing Manager in auditing the purchasing team’s processing time and resolving invoicing errors according to internal policies.
  • Assists with identifying issues with material management, detecting process failures, and identifying root causes.
  • Supports Purchasing leadership in developing and updating SOPs to reflect evolving processes and maintain accuracy.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or Industrial Distribution preferred but not required based on experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in procurement, purchasing, or supply chain management within the construction or electrical contracting industry.
  • Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) certification preferred.

Skills/Abilities

  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy in cost analysis and auditing.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills to build and maintain vendor relationships.
  • Proficiency in purchasing software and ERP systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams to drive cost-effective procurement solutions.
  • Understanding of market trends, pricing structures, and supplier agreements within the electrical contracting space.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate challenging situations and build positive relationships.

Work Environment

  • Office environment with some travel required.
  • Occasionally works in outdoor environments with exposure to dust, heat, and cold.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Manual dexterity required.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and navigate active work sites.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
