Brief Description

Automotive Advanced Manufacturing Engineer

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer (AME) will be responsible for designing new process and manufacturing lines for current and future production and will oversee and manage projects with Karma’s contract manufacturing partners. The AME Engineer develops, implements, and performs continuous improvement of world class automotive processes and drives product improvement through Design for Manufacturability, Design for Assembly and Lean Manufacturing guidelines and standards.

Responsibilities (included, but are not limited to):

  • Works closely with Design Release Engineers (DREs) to coordinate and lead DFM and DFA activities for New and modified Products, providing early feedback based on best manufacturing practices.
  • Provides guidance and feedback on GD&Ts and datum strategies including variation analysis.
  • Develop high level concept sketches for Karma’s new vehicle lines, considering safety, quality, ergonomics, process flow, CAPEX required, assembly transport, line side material display, cycle time and floor space utilization.
  • Works closely with Business Development and Finance Teams to submit competitive estimates and process proposals based on technical analysis from clients RFQ’s.
  • Responsible for the overall technical relationship and delivering the process lines/stations to production.
  • Develops and manages engineering pilot runs, product testing and qualification, and new product introductions.
  • Leads cost improvement through the application of guidelines and standards for DFM, DFA and Kaizen.
  • Coordinates Engineering Changes and their implementation.
  • Generates requests for quotations (RFQs) for new equipment & tooling.
  • Coordinates clarifications with potential equipment/tooling suppliers to ensure the project scope is clear and achievable.
  • Creates and monitors equipment installation schedules and delivers projects per the program timing.
  • Estimates project budgets and delivers per the approved investment amount.
  • Provides guidance and feedback for joining, painting, and assembling technologies.
  • Coordinates tests for modern technologies and methods.
  • Develops new manufacturing methods, project plans for major projects, cost, and timing estimates.
  • Assures product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future and current requirements.
  • Provides technical support for Body, Paint and General Assembly operations.
  • Prepares product and process reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Keeps equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special service, ensures industry standard overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Creates process documentation including layouts, standard operating procedures, process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, and control plans based on known DFMEA and Process definitions.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related Engineering or science field such as Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical Engineering, or Physics.
  • Experience working and establishing Contract Manufacturing projects is strongly desired.
  • This position requires the ability to commute between HQ in Irvine and Karma’s Manufacturing facility in Moreno Valley during the launch, spending at least 60% of the time a week in HQ, working directly with the DRE’s and VI team members.
  • Basic knowledge of industrial automation, levels of control and control architecture philosophy.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the automotive industry.
  • Must have experience with automotive OEM assembly equipment, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
  • Must have experience with Body (joining), Paint and General Assembly.
  • CAD Experience Medium to High: Catia V5, AutoCAD, Desired: Polyworks, Verisurf.
  • Experience in Automotive Joining, Painting and Assembling Methods, process, and constraints.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as keen attention to detail.
  • Project management, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Language Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Early Vehicle Project Stages experience is desired.
  • Experience in Body Accuracy (Automotive) and GD&T is desired.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable.
  • Certifications favored include Professional Engineer License (P. Eng), Certified Professional Engineer (PE), Six Sigma qualifications and Project Management Professional (PMP).

  • Ability to constantly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. and periodically 50 lbs.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or push/pull up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing their job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will spend approximately 100% (excluding breaks and meal periods) of time in a manufacturing/ warehouse environment. When working in the facility, it requires the use of personal protective equipment, including (but not limited to) steel toe shoes, bump caps, and safety goggles. Reflective colored vests and ear protection are required in certain areas.

Compensation:

$105,000 - $135,000 /annual salary. Compensation will vary DOE.

At Karma, our base pay is one part of our total rewards package.

Compensation offered may vary on multiple factors, including market location, education, skills and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position being offered.
