Summary
Edge is seeking an entry-level Mechanical Engineering CAD Specialist to support the mechanical engineering team with drafting, tool design, system assembly preparation, lay-up support, and part creation from concept through build. This role is ideal for a hands-on CAD technician or aspiring engineer who is passionate about translating ideas into precise mechanical drawings and supporting product development in a fast-paced, aerospace-focused environment. The CAD Specialist will work alongside engineers and technicians to bring mechanical concepts to life, helping to ensure our uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) are built accurately, efficiently, and to spec.

Work environment may require in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat.

The CAD Specialist will work alongside engineers and technicians to bring mechanical concepts to life, helping to ensure our uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) are built accurately, efficiently, and to spec.
Responsibilities
The following job functions are a basic requirement but are not limited to and may be assigned other duties.
- Create and revise 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings for mechanical parts, tools, assemblies, and composite lay-ups.
- Support the design and documentation of jigs, fixtures, and production tooling for assembly, bonding, and fabrication.
- Assist engineers in converting hand sketches, concepts, and prototypes into fully defined, production-ready CAD models.
- Help prepare assembly drawings, exploded views, and layout documentation to guide system integration.
- Participate in design reviews and prototype development, offering insight on buildability and tooling needs.
- Collaborate with technicians, machinists, and production teams to support the creation, assembly, and iteration of mechanical parts.
- Ensure CAD files, part numbers, and documentation are properly maintained in the PDM system.
- Perform basic tolerance analysis and fit checks under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Assist in managing updates to mechanical BOMs, part revisions, and drawing release workflows.
The following are non-exhaustive qualifications for the position:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical coursework or certification in CAD, drafting, mechanical design, or a related discipline preferred.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks (or similar like Inventor or Creo).
- Familiarity with mechanical drafting practices, dimensioning, tolerancing, and drawing standards.
- Ability to understand and interpret engineering drawings and basic mechanical assembly instruction.
- 0–2 years of professional experience in a mechanical drafting, CAD technician, or prototyping support role.
- Hands-on experience in aerospace, robotics, manufacturing, or maker-type environments is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and a passion for mechanical design.
- Willingness to work closely with engineers and technicians on iterative design and build cycles.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration mindset.
- Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and grow within a technical team.
- Experience with composite lay-up tooling or bonded structure assembly.
- Familiarity with PDM systems and drawing release processes.
- Prior experience working in aerospace, defense, or hands-on product development environments.
- Comfortable on the shop floor and around tools—mechanically inclined.
- Ability to ask good questions, adapt to change, and support fast-paced prototyping teams.
