Job Duties/Scope Of Work

HMIS is seeking an experienced environmental scientist to provide technical expertise within the Ecological Monitoring and Compliance Program. Candidates with experience in arid habitat restoration, resource management and preservation of plant, fish, wildlife and habitat monitoring, environmental compliance and mitigation planning are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be part of the Ecological Monitoring and Compliance program developing ecological study designs, conducting field monitoring, analyzing data, writing reports, and presenting data. They will be part of a team that monitors the health of rare and sensitive habitats and species throughout the Hanford Site and propose management actions to ensure their continued protection and preservation.

Essential Job Duties Of This Position Include

  • Support the Ecological Monitoring and Compliance program.
  • Complete Hanford site wide Ecological Compliance Assessments evaluating potential project impacts to biological resources before they occur and prescribing mitigations (avoidance, minimization, rectification, and compensatory) for adverse impacts if they do occur.
  • This process provides an essential link between DOE's responsibility to protect biological resources and its site missions, including remediation and waste management
  • Responsible for field surveys to identify plants, animals, and habitats and prescribe project limitations that protect valuable resources.
  • Support Ecological Resources Mitigation program through writing mitigation plans and field oversight ecological restoration activities. The position will support success monitoring and reporting for habitat restoration activities.
  • Support the ecological compliance and monitoring program by implementing key DOE-HFO guidance documents such as the Biological Resources Management Plan, Threatened and Endangered Species Management Plan, the Hanford Revegetation Manual, and other high level documents.
  • Support the Ecological Monitoring program through ecological study design, monitoring, and report writing.
  • Monitor the health of rare and sensitive habitats and species throughout the Hanford Site and propose management actions to ensure their continued protection and preservation. This may include:
  • Management plan development and writing
  • Completing biological assessments
  • Supporting DOE through consultation for species listed under the Endangered Species Act, and proposing habitat restoration projects to DOE
  • Support the update and implementation the Hanford Site Biological Resources Management Plan and other DOE resource management plans.
  • Coordinate and interface with other Hanford contractors, Department of Energy, regional Tribes, Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Support the Environmental Monitoring program through in field environmental sample collection of fish and wildlife, and sample processing following environmental sampling concepts, techniques, and QA protocols.
  • Sample collection will include the use of firearms.

Basic Qualifications

ENTRY LEVEL:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, or related Natural Science with 2 + years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience writing technical documents in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to communicate study results via written documents and oral presentations in a fashion that requires knowledge of specific details as well as overall concepts.
  • Must have extensive understanding of ecosystem function and management plans for protection of important resources.
  • Understanding of integral elements of National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and use of statistics.
  • Experience conducting field evaluations and composing findings with recommendations to reduce environmental impacts in a clear and concise manner.
