Brief Description
Job Objective:
Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor and the Laboratory Assistant Director, the Certified Phlebotomist II performs various duties associated with specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing. Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, answering questions related to specimens and testing, and assisting with the training new phlebotomists.

Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, answering questions related to specimens and testing, and assisting with the training new phlebotomists.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Certified Phlebotomist II
- Collects laboratory specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary sticks on patients
- Assists with the processing of laboratory specimens
- Organizes laboratory orders by priority and specimen type for proper collection and handling of specimens
- Operates the LIS and HIS as required for the position
- Follows proper isolation techniques
- Safely and effectively uses all necessary equipment
- Cleans laboratory equipment, work surfaces and glassware
- Receives and stocks supplies
- Records temperatures and notifies appropriate Clinical Laboratory Scientist of out-of-range values
- Answers questions regarding test orders, specimen requirements and specimen availability
- Demonstrates proper use of scripting techniques
- Participates in Continuing Education for personal growth and maintenance of certificates and licenses
- Assures completion of all yearly competency testing
- Assists in training new phlebotomists
- Demonstrates competence with computer downtime procedures
- Ability to perform at least 10 draws per hour of average complexity
- Helps distribute supplies to other departments as needed
- Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
- Adds support to other laboratory staff as necessary
Knowledge
- Knowledge of basic computer operations
- Knowledge of specimen requirements
- Knowledge of safe handling of biological samples
- Knowledge of basic isolation techniques
- Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups and proficiency in required area
- Skill in performing venipuncture and capillary draws
- Skill in effective oral and written communication
- Skill to accurately record values
- Ability to follow directions accurately
- Ability to exhibit courteous, helpful and professional behavior in dealing with patients, public and peers
- Certified Phlebotomist II — six months of related phlebotomy experience required
- Experience with infants and pediatrics is recommended
- Some experience at an acute care hospital is desirable
Education
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
- Possession of a current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health
- Ability to adhere with AVH Leaves of Absence Policy
- Ability to adhere with AVH Paid Time Off (PTO) Policy
- Ability to adhere with AVH Recording of Hours Worked Policy
- Ability to adhere to the department dress code
- Ability to organize work and establish priorities
- Ability to expand on own initiative in performance of duties

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform duties in a normal hospital clinical laboratory environment
- Job may require long periods of standing or sitting
- Job requires short periods of bending
- Job may require limited lifting
- Job requires pushing/pulling a phlebotomy cart and/or carrying a phlebotomy tray
- Job requires handling of biological specimens
