Job Overview

Operate and maintain pilot plants associated with petrochemical processes under the direction of a Development Engineer. Take readings and compare to Parameter Sheets or other guidelines and report.

Details of the Role

  • Ensure Lummus Technology HSE standards are achieved including performing routine HSE inspections, monitoring, recordkeeping and reporting in compliance with federal, state, local and company standards. Become knowledgeable of and conform to all safety rules and use of all safety procedures and equipment. This includes becoming knowledgeable and utilizing Process Safety Management requirements such as MOC (Management of Change) and Prestart up Safety Review (PSSR).
  • Be aware of, and be able to identify, any problems that are reflected from the readings and communicate these potential issues to the Development Engineer, Supervisor or Lead Operator immediately Take samples of the research operating units and deliver to the lab.
  • Assist in the construction and modification of pilot units as required, including installing stainless steel and copper tubing using dual ferrule compression fittings and insulating and leak-checking pressure equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining small scale equipment (positive displacement pumps, mass flow controllers, etc.).
  • Mix feedstock (i.e., C4s and C12s) must be able to handle drums and cylinders and lift 50lbs.
  • Must be able to operate plant equipment including forklifts, and personnel lifts.
  • Load and unload trucks when LPG/petroleum distillate shipments arrive/depart.
  • Take readings from the hydrocarbon tanks, sewer station, catalytic distillation unit, the hydrogen station, the nitrogen station and all other units. Record all measurements in the logbook and/or electronic devices.
  • Relay accurate and detailed information on how the unit ran for incoming and outgoing crews (verbal and written.)
  • Must be capable of learning and operating a distributive control system (Delta V.)
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Needs to be a team player.
  • Performance of high-quality work with safety awareness using independent judgment with minimal supervision

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be mechanically inclined.
  • Minimum GED required
  • Individual must be competent or willing to learn in the use of basic chemical and mathematical principles. Must be able to complete Training Course including passing written tests.
  • Must be computer literate and/or willing to learn to be proficient in MS Word and Excel.
  • Must have dependable transportation.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • "Certificate of Chemical Process Technician" or any other related certificates that relate to the petrochemical sector.
  • Experience with designing and building laboratory and pilot plant units preferred.
  • Experience with operating temperature pressure reactor systems.

Safety Qualifications

  • Must be able to work safely in tight/congested areas.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to emergency situations (chemical spills or releases, fires, explosions, etc.).
  • Must be able to climb several flights of stairs safely on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must be able to climb ladders safely on a regular and consistent basis.

Other Details

  • Overtime is based on weekly OT List and Vacation is based on seniority for the first 3 Months of the fiscal year, after March 31st vacation is first come first serve. One person per shift at a time.
  • Shift is 12-hour rotating shift 0645-1900hrs & 1845-0700hrs
    • Required to attend shift turnover meeting each day/night at 0645hrs/1845hrs
    • Lunch is taken on shift as available
