Position: Maintenance Worker I

Status: Non-Exempt/Full Time

Reports to: Facilities Maintenance Supervisor

Location: San Bernardino International Airport

Salary Range: $20.27 - $26.45 per hour with full benefits

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of work within the airport maintenance department, including general technical and administrative support to the Grounds, Facilities, and Fleet maintenance divisions. May use and operate a variety of manual and power tools.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Essential Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth.

  • Reviews inventory and orders, receives and/or delivers products, materials and supplies to Airport Maintenance staff as needed.
  • Assists maintenance personnel as assigned. Duties may include general fleet maintenance, grounds, landscaping and/or facility related tasks.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals and related documents.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment.
  • Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition; secures equipment and tools at the close of the workday.
  • Evaluates and establish priorities and adheres to work schedules and deadlines; organizes work, set priorities, and meets critical time deadlines.
  • Operates a variety of computer equipment including computers, copiers, printers, scanners, and specialized hardware.
  • Utilizes software programs to communicate effectively, assists in maintaining accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used; prepares reports as required.
  • Performs a variety of inventory tracking including receipt, check-in, login, labeling, inventory, transport, check-out, etc.
  • Fulfills various administrative tasks in support of department operations.
  • Safely and effectively uses and operates hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.
  • Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the public, vendors, contractors, and agency staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and one (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of grounds, facilities, and appurtenances, and/or training in the use of hand and power tools and equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
  • Successfully complete background check to obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.
  • Completion of a 10-panel drug screen for all substances deemed illegal by the Federal Government

Physical Demands

Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, walk on uneven terrain, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various agency sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Environmental Elements

Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
