Position Summary

The Engineering GIS Technician 3 is a mid-level position with increased responsibility, primarily focused on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) as well as data editing for electric and gas infrastructure within the GIS systems. This role builds upon the skills of Engineering GIS Technicians at levels 1 and 2 and requires expertise and experience to facilitate the organization of data in a manner that can be effectively utilized across the organization. Their advanced expertise in GIS technology ensures reliable and accurate data and the delivery of high-quality utility services to CoServ's members. Moreover, this position offers valuable opportunities for career advancement and continued professional growth within the Engineering GIS team.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Evaluates designs for data accuracy and model functionality before publishing data for internal and external users.
  • Modify original designs to match as-built conditions, updating graphical and equipment attributes' data within the GIS data models.
  • Review the work of others for as-built data accuracy, model functionality, and device management. Upload finalized data to the GIS database.
  • Work with various internal departments and external entities to perform data maintenance and change requests.
  • Conduct thorough quality assurance and quality control checks to ensure the validity and accuracy of the GIS data model.
  • Collaborate closely with IT/GIS and/or IT/WMS teams to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and resolve any errors or issues related to GIS data.
  • Provide GIS user support and training to the Engineering department, assisting users with GIS-related queries and offering guidance on effective use of GIS software and tools.
  • Assist Senior Technician(s) and/or Supervisor in coordinating data collection efforts as needed for special projects.
  • Take on additional duties and tasks as required.
  • Comply with established safety rules, procedures, and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Adhere to information security policies and report any suspected security incidents.

Secondary Position Responsibilities

  • Attend required company training.
  • Perform field checks, which may involve visiting construction sites or other field locations to gather data or verify information.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and training to junior team members, fostering their professional growth and development in GIS technology.
  • Incorporates external data from various sources into the GIS database, ensuring that the GIS system contains comprehensive and up-to-date information.
  • Utilizes GPS equipment in the field to collect precise location data of utility facilities and other relevant geographic information, enhancing the accuracy of GIS data.
  • In the absence of a Engineering GIS Sr Technician, the Engineering GIS Supervisor, or the GIS Services Manager, serves as the representative for the Engineering GIS team. This involves addressing concerns, providing feedback, and making suggestions or decisions to optimize GIS operations and workflows.

Position Requirements

Experience, Education and Certifications Required

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS or related field.
  • In lieu of degree, equivalent professional GIS experience may be accepted.
  • 4 years of experience in a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience with ESRI Software.
  • 2-3 years of GIS Technician experience.
  • First Aid/CPR or ability to obtain.

Experience, Education And Certifications Preferred

  • Certified in ESRI software and/or other training related to GIS.
  • 2+ years of experience with Schneider Arc FM software.
  • 2+ years of experience in an electric and gas utility environment.
  • 2+ years of experience with IMB’s Maximo Application Suite.

Skills And Abilities Required

  • Understanding of advanced GIS principles and practices.
  • Understanding of basic electrical fundamentals.
  • Understanding of basic gas fundamentals.
  • Ability to enter data quickly, correctly, and efficiently.
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to follow rules in employee handbook.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, take ownership of job responsibilities, and be proactive in seeking solutions for the department.
  • Able to work both in a team and independently when required.
  • Comfortable with working repetitive processes.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Able to adapt and contribute to shifting policies.
  • Strong investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access).

Physical Requirements

  • Works in office a minimum of 40% of the time.
    • Ability to do so up to 100% as needed.
  • Ability to sit for extended hours.
  • Works extended hours as needed or directed.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to drive as needed.
  • Occasional outdoor work, as needed, in areas with possible exposure to elements and/or poison oak, poison ivy, insect stings, etc.
Other Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver's license.
