Responsibilities

Intern in this role will utilize data science and statistical tools to investigate complex healthcare challenges. The primary areas of study include genetic biobanks, such as the NIH All of Us program, with a focus on understanding disease demographics, environmental exposures, disease trajectories, and factors influencing disease progression. Our interns are expected to actively participate in formulating analytical questions, conducting hypothesis testing, optimizing algorithms, deploying analytical solutions, and swiftly integrating stakeholder feedback.

Throughout the internship, participants will gain comprehensive experience across the data science lifecycle, including data acquisition and transformation, data engineering, exploratory analysis, feature engineering, algorithm development, and practical deployment in clinical or business contexts. Ideal candidates possess relevant coursework, project experience, and demonstrated enthusiasm for data science (e.g., participation in Kaggle competitions), even if they lack formal industry experience.

One or more mentors will be assigned to the intern to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance. In addition, the intern may be given selected work assignments to reinforce the learning experience, to assess the performance levels and to provide benefit to the work unit. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility. The duration and timing of the internship will be arranged with the intern and the sponsoring educational facility. Placement in our internship program does not provide financial assistance with relocation, housing, or transportation. Interns must pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.

Qualifications

The incumbent must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program from a college or university with a major in Computer Science with AI concentration or comparable and preferably entering the final year of the degree program. Typically, this internship would occur after the student has taken most of the courses required by the degree program. Experiences on community demographic data modeling an data ethics are highly desired.

Candidates should exhibit openness to applying concepts from various industries to healthcare, along with strong communication skills and effective teamwork abilities.

Must have authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee or asylee).
