Description
Our Network Operations team works around the clock running United’s global operation, safely, reliably and efficiently. From dispatching and routing our fleet to coordinating with maintenance line planning and crew scheduling, this team makes caring connections with our internal customers and ultimately, United’s customers. From pushback to landing, the Network Operations team is the eyes and ears on the ground no matter where in the world your United flight takes you.
Job Overview And Responsibilities
The main objective of the Meteorology Support Analyst is to create high quality weather forecast and decision-support products tailored to the unique needs of United Airlines’ operational personnel and locations within and outside of the Network Operations Center (NOC), including airports and other partner organizations. The Analyst will assist in the design and deployment of weather forecast services functions supporting frontline stakeholders across multiple operational departments.

Job Overview And Responsibilities
The main objective of the Meteorology Support Analyst is to create high quality weather forecast and decision-support products tailored to the unique needs of United Airlines’ operational personnel and locations within and outside of the Network Operations Center (NOC), including airports and other partner organizations. The Analyst will assist in the design and deployment of weather forecast services functions supporting frontline stakeholders across multiple operational departments.
- Collaborate with internal operating departments to research and document curated weather forecast workflows to address weather hazards across the entire United network
- Engage end users through field testing and user training for weather decision support tools and services
- Provide analytical and testing support to Digital Technology and other internal departments to ensure timely delivery of critical functionality to key stakeholders
- Conduct analysis of historical weather data and United operational data to support continuous verification and improvement of all weather forecast services and 3rd party providers
What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, or similar, or 4 years of relevant work experience
- 2+ years’ experience with object-oriented programming in meteorology or aviation applications (internship and college experience included)
- Knowledge of meteorological data types, formats, and weather forecasting techniques
- Working knowledge of at least one object-oriented programming language, with Python strongly preferred
- Ability to handle complex technical tasks with minimal supervision
- Creative and flexible when solving problems
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in any one or multiple of the following: SQL, data fusion, frontend or backend software development, data visualization, developing RESTful APIs, and/or Machine Learning
- Solid understanding of domestic and international geography
- Up to 10% travel
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
- 1+ years of weather forecasting experience
- 1+ years airline operations or aviation meteorology experience
- Experience with Python's Plotly/Dash Enterprise, Folium, and/or Mapbox
- Experience working with PyData stack (Pandas, Numpy, SciPy, xarray, and similar)
- Experience deploying code to GitHub and/or AWS
- Knowledge of advanced statistics
- Experience with Python Machine Learning frameworks including TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
- Knowledge of United Airlines' network, destinations and weather-related operational constraints
