JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing and directing the terminal’s operations management team in a manner that supports company initiatives and objectives.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Extensive knowledge of operating systems and associated planning tools is required for the proper direction and supervision of the overall operations planning process.
A complete understanding of other related departments’ procedures and requirements is essential in realizing the terminal’s overall operational goals and priorities.
Full responsibility in ensuring the requirements of respective customers are met with regards to vessels’ arrival, operations and departures’. This includes berth availability, all facets of vessel stevedoring, cargo availability, equipment availability, labor allocation and the provision of a safe working environment.
Serve as subject matter experts in their respective areas creating a knowledge base that the company can leverage to expand operations.
The elements of leadership, analysis and the capability for timely, clear and decisive action are essential to perform the duties of this position.
The position requires aggressive and innovative decision-making and management skills that result in a harmonious and successful operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Prepare annual operations budgets and administer execution.
- Develop and implement metrics and KPIs to assess performance in relation to company objectives and stated goals.
- Put into operation policies, procedures and controls designed at achieving company objective and stated goals and ensure they are followed.
- Analyze and identify optimization opportunities and implement new processes, procedures and methods to ensure continual improvement.
- Outline management initiatives, communicate and reinforce direction with team members.
- Provide leadership, motivate and manage team in a manner that maximizes efficiency while maintaining a safe work environment.
- Develop and maintain professional relations with all internal and external stakeholders.
- Other duties as delegated from Vice President & General Manager.

- Job Location
- Indoor: office building
- Outdoor: terminal yard, onboard vessel, cargo handling equipment and other structures.
- Environmental Conditions
- Daily exposure to weather conditions, dirt, dust, loud noise, fumes, vibration, darkness or poor lighting, hazardous materials.
- Physical Requirements
- Strength demand: ability to exert sufficient force to lift up to 50 lbs. with frequent lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
- Climbing: agility required to ascent or descent stairs, ramps, ladders and similar equipment, i.e., bridge or structure to embark or disembark vessel.
- Standing: ability to remain in standing position especially for sustained periods of time.
- Walking: ability to frequently move about on foot.
- Bend at the waist: ability to bend the body downward, forward or side to side.
- Talking: ability to express or change information by means of the spoken word.
- Reaching: ability to extend hands or arms in any direction.
- Pulling: ability to exert sufficient force to draw, drag or otherwise move objects in a sustained motion.
- Balance: exceeding the ordinary need for balance in maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when climbing on unstable surfaces.
- Hearing: ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound.
- Kneeling: ability to bend legs at knee or come to rest on knee(s).
- Possess valid and unrestricted driver’s license
- Able to drive on even and uneven surfaces, around heavy cargo handling equipment and construction zones.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- BS/BA degree in Business Management, Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, or equivalent experience working in management
- Experience in managing related union labor
- Knowledge or principles of terminal operations
- Experience with computerized operating systems
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
- Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
- Ability to manage a large, complex and diverse workforce in a fast paced environment
- Analytical and problem solving skills to respond quickly and effectively to operational issues
- Ability to plan and organize projects in a fast paced environment
- Availability to work varied hours, shifts and days
- Ability to communicate effectively with union-represented workforce and other staff
- Accountability for safe and efficient operation, together with the ability to maintain a positive working relationship with union-represented and other employees
