Your Contribution

As a Manager of Foreign Trade – US reporting to the MAHLE’s Global Head of Foreign Trade, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance regarding customs and export control laws and regulations in daily operations within a region. This role will ensure that all internal guidelines and procedures are implemented, and compliance to all local laws and regulations.

This role is responsible to

  • Manage customs related activities in the countries of responsibility at the lowest lawful cost.
  • Coordinate the representation of MAHLE for customs offices, chamber of commerce, and other organizations.
  • Ensure MAHLE companies are updated on customs and international trade process changes that may impact operative business activity.
  • Perform and manage operational customs processes in plants across the region, such as: import/export filing and processing, tariff coding and classification of products, origin of goods, preferential calculation, and special export processes (letter of credit, carnet, etc.).
  • Manage and monitor activities of customs brokers and other customs-related service providers.
  • Set up all systems and processes to optimize customs and import duties according to statutory provision.
  • Reduce risks associated with customs matters considering local specifics.
  • Ensure a robust and legally compliant inbound and outbound customs process in close cooperation with internal and external stakeholders including authorities.
  • Ensure compliance regarding export control legislation within the region.
  • Responsible for compliant export control processes for MAHLE’s operations in the region.
  • Perform and manage operational export control processes in plants across the region, such as: sanctioned party list screening, embargo country check, product related export control classification (including technology transfer and software), and critical end usage.
  • Ability to stop any contract, transaction, and export operation as well as any other action relevant to export control.
  • Coordinate and communicate governmental regulations to all affected locations and departments.
  • Integrate related functions, which are affected by foreign trade, such as purchasing, sales, research and development, IT, legal, etc. together with the Head of Foreign Trade Export.
  • Provide support and consultation to various internal business areas, as well as project teams regarding customs affairs.
  • Work to continuously improve business processes including digitalization measures.
  • Responsible for the implementation and continuous improvement of cost-effective, compliant customs processes for MAHLE’s operations in the region, through deployment of procedures, service providers, and IT resources.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating regional requirements for processes, IT systems etc. and ensuring these are integrated into global standards.
  • Drive problem solving concerning customs and foreign trade issues and provide sustainable solutions.
  • Exploration of cost reduction potential by transfer of functions to best cost countries.
  • Standardization of all foreign trade processes within the region.
  • Manage the external audit process, ensure all findings are closed in a timely manner through defined and implemented countermeasures, together with the Head of Foreign Trade Export Control or Customs (COE).
  • Provide regular reporting to the chief export control officers for each legal entity within the region.
  • Cross-functional alignment.
  • Act as contact person for the local (plant) export control officers and chief export control officers.
  • Coordinate change requests for MORE/SAP-global trade services (GTS) module governance team.

Your Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Business Administration, Engineering or related field from an accredited four-year college or university required
  • Minimum of 8+ years previous or related experience, 5+ years of management experience required
  • Advanced knowledge of export control legislation (mainly European Union and United States), customs laws, origin of goods and preferential treatment, local laws and regulations required
  • Experience with SAP required. SAP global trade services (GTS) module preferred
  • Excellent leadership and decision-making skills required, ability to make difficult decisions and set the example for employees
  • Excellent planning and analytical skills required
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to influence and develop strong working relationships with colleagues, senior level management and/or executives, vendors, suppliers, etc.
  • Automotive industry experience preferred
