Job Summary

The QC Technical Director is responsible for the coordination, planning, strategy and supervision of the contract/project quality management system to ensure specific contracts/projects meet or exceed established quality control standards and customer specifications. This role will also have managerial oversight and review of the workflow process of company employees, subcontractors, and vendors relating to QA/QC activities including verification of quality records, documentation, lab operations and goals, non-destructive testing and applicable codes and standards. The QC Technical Director will be responsible for the implementation of the Quality policy by all employees in accordance with Colas USA’s values.

Main Responsibilities

  • Embrace the Company’s safety culture, actively support all safety initiatives, and adhere to defined accountabilities implemented by the Safety Steering and Continuous Improvement teams
  • Support, promote, and practice the Company’s core values, vision, and mission; follow code of ethics, workplace conduct, safety, and other established policies
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and support development of QC teams within the organization
  • Act as a subject matter expert regarding quality control specifications and principles
  • Develop and implement quality initiatives to support continuous improvement
  • Ensure all quality control operations and activities are conducted in conformance with company policies, regulatory agency guidance, and compliance standards
  • Establish and maintain effective communication channels and drive collaboration across departments/regions to support quality initiatives
  • Collaborate with cross-functional/regional teams to establish and maintain quality and reliability standards based on product, engineering, and customer requirements; develop and implement measures to improve methods that support safety, service, quality, and performance
  • Establish organizational priorities in support of operations, cost control, and waste reduction, including effective utilization of resources related to the quality control function
  • Coordinate use of external laboratories and third parties involved in testing and quality control compliance
  • Collect, analyze, and present data regarding product, material and process quality to management teams; identify trends, and recommend solutions
  • Act as a liaison with federal, state, and local agencies on behalf of the company for matters related to quality
  • Engage in project work and special assignments in support of organizational goals and initiatives

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (quality management, engineering, business, etc.) and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • ACI and DOT testing certifications; advanced certifications preferred
  • Valid driver's license and ability to maintain clean driving record required

Skills

  • 10+ years of technical quality control experience and/or equivalent combination of training and experience required.
  • A minimum of 3 years in a leadership role required
  • Expert knowledge of applicable material testing standards and specifications governed by federal, state, and local testing agencies, including DOT, ASTM, and AASHTO standards
  • Demonstrated understanding of construction processes and asphalt and ready-mix concrete materials production
  • Proficient in the use of standard QA/QC testing equipment and quality metrics
  • Solid business and financial acumen
  • Self-directed, results-oriented, and highly motivated, requiring minimal direct guidance
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to all levels of employees
  • Ability to lead and train other QHSE employees
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office specifically Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel

Physical Requirements

  • Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE), as required by company safety guidelines
  • Occasionally required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Regularly required to communicate, detect, converse with, discern, convey, express oneself, exchange information
  • Regularly required to detect, resolve, perceive, identify, recognize, observe, inspect, estimate, assess and detect moving equipment to safely inspect work at heights above 10 feet)
  • Regularly required to work from a seated position for long periods using a computer
  • Frequent exposure to typical production plant/aggregate site conditions, including dust and loud noise, heavy equipment/machinery, loud noise, and all-weather conditions
  • Travel, including overnight stays away from home may be required
  • Regularly required to communicate and perform tasks requiring visual acuity
