Job Summary
The Research Scientist will contribute to research and development projects, focusing on the control implementation of biomedical devices and systems for rehabilitation, preventative care, wound healing, and adaptive exercise. The Research Scientist will be involved in designing, developing, and testing new technologies, leading or supporting grant opportunities, writing proposals, fostering collaborations, and directing teams of students and/or junior researchers. Additionally, the Research Scientist will contribute to patentable ideas and manage a dynamic mix of lab work and project management tasks. We are looking for a dedicated professional ready to make significant contributions to our innovative research initiatives and help shape the future of technology.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Design, simulate, and implement advanced control algorithms (e.g., PID, adaptive, model predictive control. Etc.) for biomedical devices and systems.
- Create intuitive and accessible user interfaces for device interaction, tailored to end-users including patients, clinicians, and researchers, using platforms such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, or embedded systems.
- Collect, process, and analyze experimental data using tools such as MATLAB, Python, or R to evaluate system performance and inform iterative design improvements.
- Support building and refining hardware/software prototypes, integrating sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers.
- Identify funding opportunities and contribute to or lead writing efforts (proposals, publications, reports, presentations, etc.).
- Participate in developing academic and industry collaborations.
- Document work / keep accurate records.
- Present findings/results through both oral and written communication to internal and external customers.
- Perform in a dynamic environment requiring multitasking, working collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, and conducting some work on projects independently.
- Maintain awareness of current technological advancements related to their field of expertise.
- Work with other units within UTARI and UTA as needed.
- Supervise students and/or junior staff.

- Expertise in control system design and implementation, specifically applied to biomedical devices. Candidates should have expertise and experience in at least two (2) of the following areas:
- (1) Experience designing and implementing control strategies for compliant, flexible robotic systems and exoskeletons used in biomedical applications such as preventative care devices, assistive devices and rehabilitation tools OR
- (2) Familiarity with supervised and unsupervised learning methods for biomedical signal processing, user intent recognition, or adaptive control OR
- (3) Proficiency in programming languages and environments relevant to control systems and biomedical engineering.
- PhD in Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering with relevant expertise.
- PhD in Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering plus two (2) years of relevant experience in control system implementations.
- Experience in seeking external funding from relevant funding agencies and grant writing.
- Notable publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Proven leadership and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- PhD in Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering plus five (5) years of relevant experience in control system implementations.
- Proven track record of securing research funding and grants from relevant funding agencies.
- Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Proven leadership and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated experience in the design, simulation, and implementation of closed-loop control systems for biomedical devices.
- Experience applying machine learning techniques to biomedical data, such as classification of movement patterns, user intent prediction, or image analysis.
- Experience in:
- Programming Languages: Python, C++, nodeJS
- Embedded Systems: Arduino, UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
- Software Tools: MATLAB, Gtk3, EagleCAD, SolidWorks, Git, etc.
- Experience with GUI development and real-time data visualization.
- Experience in preparation of competitive research proposals.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams involving engineers, clinicians, and researchers.
- Experience in proposal writing.
- Advanced knowledge in the control of soft robotic systems and wearable exoskeletons, with a focus on human-device interaction, compliance control, and assist-as-needed strategies.
- Proficiency analyzing human motion and translate biomechanical insights into control system improvements.
- Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
- Skilled in designing, setting up, and executing experimental protocols for control system validation.
