General Summary: The Patient Care Technician (PCT) assists the Nursing Department in the care of patients. The PCT ensures that LifeCare Hospital’s philosophy, standards, policies, and procedures are met and maintained professionally. The PCT is actively involved in department, transdisciplinary team, and LifeCare activities to ensure individualized, patient-centered health care for all patient populations admitted to LifeCare Hospital.

Patient Population: Has contact with patients in a clinical setting; understands and demonstrates appropriate behavior when interacting with patients in the adult (18-65 yrs of age) and geriatric (65 and older) populations.

Supervision: Not applicable.

Standard Essential Functions

  • The knowledge and skills necessary to perform the position requirements are demonstrated through the successful completion of competencies established for the position, to include the population served and other special needs of patients or customers served by the department.
  • Adheres to LifeCare policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are required.

Job-Specific Functions

  • Provides competent and proficient patient care under the direction of the nursing staff. Assists nurses in identifying and responding to patient needs during rounds (e.g., personal needs, safety needs, etc.).
  • Always ensures patient safety by notifying the assigned nurse or nursing supervisor of any risk factors seen, initiating, and maintaining appropriate safety measures. Responds appropriately and assists others in emergencies calmly and professionally.
  • Plans/organizes work for assigned shift to properly utilize time, resources, and supplies to ensure the patient receives appropriate quality care.
  • Communicates patient status and changes in patient condition to the nurse and the next shift for continuity of care.
  • Accurately completes and documents assignments (e.g., vital signs, blood glucose, meals, intake/output, etc.)
  • Maintains and ensures the equipment is clean and in working order; assures supplies are adequate.
