Description
The Radio Shop Technician is responsible for the installation, removal, and re-installation of two-way radio communication equipment, mobile data systems, peripheral devices, and related accessories in vehicles operated by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and other public safety agencies within the county. This position also includes performing first-echelon maintenance and repair of mobile and portable radio equipment at the radio shop, communication tower sites, district offices, and other remote locations throughout Montgomery County.
The technician will spend approximately 65% of their time working in the radio shop and 35% in the field at tower sites, district offices, and other remote locations.
Responsibilities
Shift Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm however, candidates must be able to work adjusted hours including nights, weekends, and holidays in the event of mission critical incidents.

Description
The Radio Shop Technician is responsible for the installation, removal, and re-installation of two-way radio communication equipment, mobile data systems, peripheral devices, and related accessories in vehicles operated by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and other public safety agencies within the county. This position also includes performing first-echelon maintenance and repair of mobile and portable radio equipment at the radio shop, communication tower sites, district offices, and other remote locations throughout Montgomery County.
The technician will spend approximately 65% of their time working in the radio shop and 35% in the field at tower sites, district offices, and other remote locations.
Responsibilities
- Install and remove two-way radio communication equipment and related accessories in vehicles using air, power, and hand tools.
- Fabricate custom components such as mounting brackets or wiring harnesses to support the installation of radio equipment.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in mobile and portable radio equipment to perform necessary repairs.
- Coordinate work order scheduling with other radio shop technicians to ensure timely completion of radio-related tasks.
- Complete work tickets, service logs, and documentation to accurately track all radio equipment installations and maintenance.
- Maintain inventory of radio hardware, components, and shop tools.
- Keep assigned work areas clean and organized to maintain a safe and efficient workspace
- Operate vehicles and travel to radio tower sites and other remote locations to perform
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Associates degree or completion of vocational or industry technical training courses in modern electronic technology preferred
- FCC license or C.E.T. certification preferred
- A minimum of two years paid experience in electronics work with all types of two-way radios required
- Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations as they pertain to Public Safety Radio services is preferred
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and resident of the contiguous United States for a period of time sufficient to conduct a background investigation
- Must possess a current valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance with no more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years
- No conviction above a Class B Misdemeanor or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last 10 years nor have been on or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively
- Must be able to follow detailed oral and written instructions in the installation/removal/repair of electronic mobile communications equipment
- Possess understanding of basic vehicle electronics and wiring
- Must be able to read and comprehend technical shop manuals, troubleshooting guides,manufacturers' specifications, warranties, parts catalogs and work orders
- Ability to learn computer software applications to program and/or troubleshoot equipment installation
- Must be physically able to climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, lift and squat for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift items up to 50 lbs. Standing for 50% of work day is expected.
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring of multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments
- May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moderate to loud noise level
- Willingness to cross train & accept additional duties as assigned
