TRADESPERSON

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Tradesperson is under the general supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader. The Tradesperson is minimally knowledgeable and performs semi-skilled maintenance work on City streets and drainage systems. The Tradesperson shall be capable of performing basic tasks with supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:

  • Perform maintenance and repair work on City concrete and asphalt streets on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Tamp, pack, shovel and level concrete/asphalt, or other materials.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment used in street maintenance and related activities. (i.e. Roller, Dump Truck, Backhoe, Front-End loader, Skid Steer, Jackhammer, Drills, Hand Tools).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in street repair activities.
  • Ability to use mechanical and non-mechanical hand tools and other devices used in performing routine asphalt/concrete street repairs, etc.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have valid Class A CDL or obtain within the 6 month probationary period.
  • Ability to, while under supervision, take on-call duties within 1 year.

TECHNICIAN

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Streets Technician is under the general supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader. The Technician is moderately knowledgeable and performs semi-skilled maintenance work on City streets and drainage systems. The Streets Technician shall be capable of performing basic tasks without supervision.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in concrete, asphalt and/or drainage work.
  • Ability to work in the on-call rotation.
  • Basic knowledge of all work procedures and operation of the equipment.
  • Possession of Work Zone Traffic Control Certification.

SENIOR TECHNICIAN

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Technician is under the general supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader. The Senior Technician is knowledgeable and performs skilled maintenance work on City streets and drainage systems. The Senior Technician shall be capable of supervising and directing the work of others in the absence of the crew leader.

EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:

  • Maintains a high standard of safety, conduct, and job performance.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on City concrete and asphalt streets on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Tamp, pack, shovel and level concrete/asphalt, or other materials.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment used in street maintenance and related activities. (i.e. Roller, Dump Truck, Backhoe, Front-End loader, Skid Steer, Jackhammer, Drills, Hand Tools).

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have valid Class A CDL or obtain within the 6 month probationary period.
  • Minimum of 4 years experience in concrete, asphalt and/or drainage work.
  • Participates in and shows proficiency in the on-call rotation, proficient in all aspects of work to be performed and operation of all equipment.
  • Demonstrates leadership with ability to fill in for crew leader in their absence with no supervision.
  • Possession of Work Zone Traffic Control Certification.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:

The physical activity of this position

  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Crawling. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing. Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Feeling. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

The Physical Requirements Of This Position

  • Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision.

  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position

  • The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures typically below 32° for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions, such as wind and humidity.
  • The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100° for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions, such as wind and humidity.
  • The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • The worker is subject to vibration. Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
