This individual will directly support the Chief Medical Officer of Optum Health. As a strategist, organizer, and implementer, the Director will assess new initiatives for alignment with the organization’s strategy, determine an initial approach, and align the program with the existing business structure. In addition the individual serves as a trusted and familiar voice to help determine, articulate and execute the business vision, mission, strategies and tactics to drive growth, affordability and quality, innovation and relationships. This role proactively assumes responsibility for leading and executing on new strategic initiatives and programs where needed as well as responding to requests in support of the Clinical Excellence leadership team. This individual will have an understanding of key business blue chips and provide prioritization and alignment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • New Strategic Programs & Initiatives
  • Manage new requests of Clinical Excellence, including initial assessment and framing for clarity and objective, and bring these opportunities internal to the team to determine appropriate owner. Manage through completion if approved
  • Assess new opportunities for value and alignment to organizational priorities as well as frame up initial approach and structure to align with business areas
  • Assumes leadership on designated new programs that come to Clinical Excellence that lack a natural owner within the functionally organized team
  • Responsible for working efforts through alignment to an existing business function or completion along with reporting status and results to leadership
  • Program Management
  • Assist in completion of high priority tasks for leader to highest levels of quality
  • Provide weekly status updates to leader on key progress & deliverables for new programs in addition to calling out areas with barriers
  • Keep pulse on business to ensure work streams are strategically aligned to organization goals and help connect dots within and across teams
  • Develop clear action items and track follow-up after meetings
  • Assists in prioritization of leaders schedule and time allocation to support high priority work streams and initiatives
  • Analyze and frame decisions for executive and staff
  • Business and Strategic Planning & Execution
  • Plans, coordinates, and prepares the resources and materials as well as manages agenda and follow up for the following recurring meetings:
  • Direct Reports / Leadership Meeting, etc.
  • Plans, coordinates, and prepares the resources and materials as well as manages agenda and follow up for ad hoc meetings per request of leader:
  • Speaking engagements, etc.
  • Supports development of any recurring deliverables / reports / decks needing support
  • Gathers and deciphers critical documents and information, investigates and thoroughly answers critical questions, and ensures timely follow up of all action items
  • Anticipates, manages preparation for, and, when appropriate facilitates meetings and events on behalf of Clinical Excellence team ensuring adherence to deadlines
  • Develop consistency with regard to presentations and communications
  • Organizational Alignment & Support
  • Assists members of the leadership team to perform their duties to the best of their ability
  • Ensure new programs that are approved are aligned appropriately within the existing leadership team
  • Engages in and provides feedback on new programs and other key initiatives ensuring they are representative of senior leader’s goals and requirements
  • Serves as an OptumCare culture ambassador, helping to cultivate a high performing team that is motivated to succeed and continually strives for OptumCare alignment through open communication, effective change management and the establishment of a strong operating culture

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of health industry experience and/or in a large complex matrixed organization experience
  • 5+ years of project management and/or operational experience (operations, product development, marketing, finance, sales, etc.) managing significant and complex projects
  • Demonstrated business acumen in financial analysis, reporting and forecasting and solid understanding of operations
  • Expert at strategic conceptualization both at a local level and enterprise level
  • Solid analytical skills; has hands-on experience; ability to quickly aggregate and analyze information and draw conclusions
  • Solid communicator; capable of effectively presenting ideas and selling concepts and tactics; excellent writer, proven ability to communicate effectively with executive-levels; ability to quickly understand needs and act on those needs; ability to conceptualize and effectuate change management and 'out-of-the-box' thinking
  • Proven ability to build relationships cross-functionally, at all levels of the organization and lead toward common goals
  • Advanced MS PowerPoint and Excel skills

The salary range for this role is $150,200 to $288,500 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
