The Credit Risk Underwriting Manager is responsible for leading a team of Credit Risk Underwriters, ensuring accurate and compliant underwriting decisions in accordance with company guidelines and regulatory standards. This leadership role combines strategic oversight with hands-on expertise in evaluating borrower creditworthiness, maintaining portfolio quality, and supporting risk management initiatives. The Credit Risk Underwriting Manager partners cross-functionally with originations, operations, compliance, and executive leadership to uphold responsible lending practices and protect the company’s credit profile.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Credit Risk Underwriters to ensure consistent, high-quality credit decisions.
- Oversee the daily pipeline and workflow management to meet service-level agreements (SLAs) and turnaround time targets.
- Review and analyze complex loan files, including income, asset, collateral, and credit documentation, to guide underwriting decisions.
- Maintain and enforce internal credit risk policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory compliance in all underwriting activities.
- Serve as a final credit decision authority on escalated or high-risk files and provide second-level reviews when necessary.
- Collaborate with Account Executives, Account Managers, and Operations to resolve complex scenarios and streamline documentation.
- Analyze credit performance metrics and trends to identify risks, recommend policy enhancements, and support executive reporting.
- Lead initiatives related to audit readiness, quality control (PFQC), and credit file reviews to ensure regulatory and internal standards are met.
- Facilitate training and development programs to elevate underwriting proficiency and credit risk awareness across the team.
- Act as a subject matter expert on credit risk strategy, industry best practices, and regulatory changes.
- Participate in cross-departmental projects focused on innovation, automation, and continuous process improvement.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in credit risk underwriting, with 2+ years in a management or team lead capacity within consumer or mortgage lending.
- In-depth knowledge of credit risk analysis, income assessment, DTI calculations, and collateral evaluation.
- Strong familiarity with regulatory requirements (e.g., Dodd-Frank, ECOA, Fair Lending) and investor guidelines.
- Proficiency in underwriting systems and LOS platforms such as Encompass, Meridian Link, or similar technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team while upholding quality, compliance, and productivity standards.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills with a data-driven decision-making approach.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
