Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Lead is responsible for managing all aspects of the sterile processing workflow, with a specific focus on orthopedic surgical instrumentation. This role ensures the effective decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and inventory of surgical sets and equipment to support daily orthopedic procedures. The Supervisor will lead a small, skilled team and work closely with OR staff to maintain high standards of safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department in a high-volume orthopedic outpatient setting.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor SPD staff; oversee scheduling, evaluations, and continued competency development.
  • Coordinate with OR personnel to ensure accurate and timely delivery of instruments and equipment for scheduled cases.
  • Maintain expertise in orthopedic instrument trays, power tools, scopes, and implants; ensure proper care and handling.
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards (AAMI, AORN, OSHA) and accreditation requirements (e.g., AAAHC).
  • Monitor and document sterilization cycles, biological/chemical testing, equipment maintenance, and case cart accuracy.
  • Manage inventory levels, including loaner instrumentation, consignment items, and implant tracking.
  • Develop, revise, and enforce SPD policies and procedures to reflect orthopedic best practices.
  • Support a clean, safe, and organized department environment with strong infection control measures.
  • Act as a liaison between SPD and the OR to resolve issues and enhance workflow efficiency.
  • Evolve in your role when performing supplemental responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of sterile processing technician program required.
  • Minimum 3 years sterile processing experience with at least 1 year in an orthopedic or surgical setting.
  • At least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role preferred.
  • Computer skills required with minimum proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
