Job Summary:
The Retail Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety programs and procedures across all assigned convenience store locations. This role is crucial in ensuring a safe and secure environment for employees and customers, minimizing workplace hazards, preventing accidents, and ensuring compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local safety regulations. The Retail Safety Manager will work closely with store managers, employees, and leadership to foster a strong safety culture and continuously improve safety performance.

Job Summary:

This role is crucial in ensuring a safe and secure environment for employees and customers, minimizing workplace hazards, preventing accidents, and ensuring compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local safety regulations. The Retail Safety Manager will work closely with store managers, employees, and leadership to foster a strong safety culture and continuously improve safety performance.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Develop and Implement Safety Programs: Design, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, and programs tailored to the specific risks and needs of convenience store operations, including but not limited to:
- Hazard communication and chemical safety
- Fire prevention and emergency preparedness
- Security protocols and robbery deterrence
- Slip, trip, and fall prevention
- Food safety and sanitation
- Ergonomics and safe lifting practices
- Bloodborne pathogen control
- Workplace violence prevention
- Loss prevention strategies related to safety
- Conduct Risk Assessments and Inspections: Regularly conduct safety audits and inspections of store locations to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Incident Investigation and Reporting: Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses thoroughly; identify root causes; and recommend corrective and preventive actions. Maintain accurate records of all safety-related incidents and reporting.
- Safety Training and Education: Develop and deliver engaging safety specific training programs for all employees, including ongoing refresher courses. Ensure employees understand safety procedures, emergency protocols, and their responsibilities in maintaining a safe workplace.
- Regulatory Compliance: Stay up to date on all relevant federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, FDA) and ensure all store operations are in full compliance. Manage communication and interaction with regulatory agencies as needed.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response: Develop and maintain emergency action plans for various scenarios, including fire, severe weather, robbery, and medical emergencies. Conduct drills and exercises to ensure employee preparedness.
- Safety Communication and Promotion: Foster a strong safety culture by promoting safety awareness through regular communication, safety meetings, posters, and other initiatives. Serve as a point of contact for safety-related concerns from employees and managers.
- Collaboration and Support: Work collaboratively with store managers, district managers, and other departments to implement safety initiatives and address safety concerns effectively. Provide guidance and support to store teams on safety-related matters.
- Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate and organized records of safety inspections, training, incident reports, and corrective actions. Prepare regular reports on safety performance and trends for leadership.
- Continuous Improvement: Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs and identify opportunities for improvement. Implement best practices and innovative solutions to enhance safety performance.
- Security Management Support: Collaborate with loss prevention or security teams to implement and monitor security measures aimed at protecting employees, customers, and assets.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience and relevant certifications may be considered.
- 5–8 years of experience in safety management, preferably in a retail, convenience store, or multi-site environment.
- Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, FDA).
- Strong understanding of safety principles, hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigation techniques.
- Experience developing and delivering safety training programs.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Preferred Certifications: CSP, CHST, OSHA certifications
- Other specific skills or requirements relevant to the company or industry
- Ability to travel to various store locations within the assigned region.
- Ability to conduct physical inspections, which may involve walking, standing, bending, and lifting.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions at store locations.
