The Parks Academy is the largest provider of training for Parks employees, training over 20,000 people each year on over 50 different topics. The Parks Academy offers diverse training to all Agency employees, including courses covering parks inspection, leadership, blueprint reading, defensive driving and horticultural maintenance.

Major Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Chief of Training, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, assist in managing the Parks Academy.
  • Supervise staff and represent the Chief when needed.
  • Conduct leadership, supervision, field, maintenance and operations training for all levels of staff.
  • Perform needs analyses and distribute questionnaires to assess training needs. Update existing courses and develop new curriculum.
  • Assist with special projects and work with Parks staff and outside consultants to develop and present new training.
  • Prepare manuals and other written and visual materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Proficiency in public speaking. 2. Supervisory, teaching, and training experience. Experience in curriculum development is a plus. 3. Experience in Parks & Recreation maintenance and operations, including facilities management. 4. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. 5. Experience in computer graphics is a plus.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
