Brief Description
Job Objective: The Clinical Training and Skills Development Coordinator is responsible for managing onboarding, clinical training, and ongoing skills development for perioperative nursing staff. This role plays a critical part in supporting new graduate integration through a structured perioperative training pathway, maintaining staff competencies, and promoting safe, standardized practices in the Operating Room. In partnership with nursing leadership, this role also oversees the administrative infrastructure of education programs, ensuring the effective documentation of competencies, regulatory training compliance, and clinical skill development for perioperative staff.

This role plays a critical part in supporting new graduate integration through a structured perioperative training pathway, maintaining staff competencies, and promoting safe, standardized practices in the Operating Room. In partnership with nursing leadership, this role also oversees the administrative infrastructure of education programs, ensuring the effective documentation of competencies, regulatory training compliance, and clinical skill development for perioperative staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- New Graduate Onboarding
- Leads design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of an accelerated onboarding track for new graduates entering the OR.
- Coordinates and facilitates a new grad program, ensuring full integration into departmental orientation timelines.
- Collaborates with HR and academic institutions to expand and maintain a pipeline of qualified perioperative personnel.
- Clinical Education & Professional Development
- Develops and delivers competency-based training programs aligned with evolving perioperative standards and hospital priorities.
- Coordinates mandatory annual skills fairs, in-services, and continuing education offerings to ensure sustained clinical excellence.
- Supports cross-training initiatives and clinical ladder advancement programs to improve workforce flexibility and engagement.
- Provides expert consultation during high-risk clinical events and new technology rollouts.
- Administrative & Program Oversight
- Maintains centralized tracking systems for clinical competencies, orientation checklists, certification renewals, and education compliance for all perioperative staff.
- Ensures timely completion of mandatory training, preceptorship evaluations, and department-specific skills validations.
- Analyzes and reports onboarding data, program effectiveness, and retention trends to leadership, identifying areas for process improvement.
- Oversees scheduling, attendance, documentation, and audit-readiness for all educational activities.
- Leads the development and implementation of metrics to evaluate the impact of education on patient safety, staff performance, and quality outcomes.
- Leadership & Collaboration
- Partners with perioperative leadership, quality teams, and educators across units to advance organizational learning and high-reliability practices.
- Participate in staff interviews, training progress evaluations, and recommendations for additional support or remediation.
- Contributes to annual department planning, budget recommendations, and strategic initiatives related to staff development and patient outcomes.
- Serves as a liaison between clinical operations and regulatory/accreditation teams during surveys and readiness assessments.
- Support interdepartmental initiatives aimed at improving staff engagement, recognition, and professional development.
- Assist with organizing or facilitating hospital-wide training fairs, new hire orientations, or interdisciplinary learning events.
- Provide back-up support for documentation audits, skills fair logistics, or administrative tasks during periods of high volume.
- Participate in special projects, task forces, or pilot programs related to clinical training, quality improvement, or workflow optimization.
- Contribute to content development for internal newsletters, bulletin boards, or digital training platforms.
- Attend optional conferences, webinars, or community outreach events to represent the Surgical Services department when approved.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of perioperative nursing standards, AORN guidelines, and sterile technique.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements including The Joint Commission (TJC), CDPH, CMS, and OSHA related to surgical services.
- Familiarity with adult learning principles, competency-based training models, and staff development practices.
- Understanding of electronic medical records learning management systems, and digital competency tracking tools.
- Awareness of trends and innovations in surgical care, infection prevention, and clinical quality improvement.
- Advanced clinical nursing skills in both scrub and circulate roles.
- Proficient in coordinating and delivering hands-on training and skill-based assessments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for instruction, documentation, and coaching.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and other clinical education platforms.
- Effective time management, project coordination, and attention to detail.
- Ability to assess individual learning needs and adapt training approaches accordingly.
- Ability to organize, track, and prioritize multiple onboarding and competency workflows concurrently.
- Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels, promoting a respectful and supportive learning environment.

Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of acute care perioperative nursing experience.
- 2 years as a nurse educator, preferred.
- Demonstrated experience developing, tracking, and reporting on educational programs and staff competencies.
- Proficiency with electronic learning systems, Microsoft Excel, and clinical tracking tools.
- Current California RN license required.
- Current CNOR preferred or eligibility within 1 year.
- Ability to adhere with AVMC Attendance and Punctuality Policy.
