Summary
The Baltimore Orioles are seeking a seasoned and detail-oriented Senior Director, Controller to lead the Club’s accounting operations, ensure compliance with MLB financial regulations, and support strategic financial initiatives. This position is responsible for overseeing general ledger management, monthly close processes, treasury, financial reporting, tax compliance, and audit readiness. The Senior Director will serve as a key advisor to the CFO and will play a critical role in maintaining financial integrity and supporting the Club’s long-term business goals.

Summary
The Baltimore Orioles are seeking a seasoned and detail-oriented Senior Director, Controller to lead the Club’s accounting operations, ensure compliance with MLB financial regulations, and support strategic financial initiatives. This position is responsible for overseeing general ledger management, monthly close processes, treasury, financial reporting, tax compliance, and audit readiness. The Senior Director will serve as a key advisor to the CFO and will play a critical role in maintaining financial integrity and supporting the Club’s long-term business goals.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of close processes including reviewing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, performing variance analysis, and distributing monthly reporting to department heads.
- Oversee and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes with accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain and improve internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures in compliance with GAAP and MLB regulations.
- Oversee the preparation of the annual MLB Financial Information Questionnaire (FIQ) along with interim FIQ’s (IFIQ’s), the Revenue Sharing calculation, and the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) rent calculation as described in the Stadium Lease.
- Partner with the FP&A team and manage the preparation of financial statements for executive management, external auditors, league reporting, and bank reporting.
- Support capital project accounting, including ballpark upgrades, real estate development, and technology investments.
- Manage and oversee the payroll function, including the review and approval of player payments to ensure compliance with MLB rules and adherence to contracts.
- Manage tax and treasury functions by leveraging relationships with banks, tax advisors, governmental agencies, and other relevant entities.
- Prepare and compile all debt and league compliance reports and work across organization to ensure proper communication with other department heads.
- Manage cash flow processes, including cash forecasting and debt management, to support operational needs and capital projects.
- Work directly with tax accountants to complete tax documentation and ensure proper distribution of tax documents to investors and ownership.
- Key contributor to the development and administration of financial policies related to areas including expenses, capital expenditures, and cash management.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations, including sales/use tax, payroll taxes, IRS 1099s, and other compliance reporting.
- Lead, develop, and drive a high-performing and skilled accounting team, ensuring clear role delineation and enhancing cross-functional collaboration across departments.
- Leading the evaluation and implementation of system improvements inclusive of an AP workflow process and ERP system to replace current tools, driving automation, and data accuracy.
- Lead relationships with external auditors, ensuring comprehensive compliance with all local, state, and federal tax laws.
- Identifying areas for improvement and implementing improvements to processes
- Willing to work on other ad hoc projects and analyses as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
- Must demonstrate a clear understanding and application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in sports, entertainment, media, or hospitality industries a plus.
- Meticulous, ambitious, organized, team player.
- Experience working through an ERP implementation a plus.
